Yeah I know, on a Winger thread, which is why it surprises me you would say it here and lump GNR in with the bands you hate so much.

i think he might mean the internet allowing easier spread of underground music and encouraging people to turn away from the big names as pushed by record companies in the old record industry model,

or i could be wrong as napster was late 90's wasnt it ?

oh well never mind

Zak's argument was indeed about commercialization and about how bands and their music were commodified and sterilized for their commercial appeal. GNR, however, was the antithesis of that, for a rock n roll band anyway.

I don't hate GnR. It's just these were bloody massive back in the day and I got nothing from it other than someone looking like a Jim Henson creation in a big hat throwing out the 'licks' behind a screechy fella. All in 'mega vision' at a stadium near you.

It said nothing to me about my life. PJ and Nirvana brought it back to the people man.

I think that 'bringing it back to the people' revolution started with GnR though. They weren't fluffballs singing about prom. They got big in the first place because they were singing about stuff that connected with people in a real way.

'rebellion' dressed up as pantomime villains.

The 'Grunge' and underground alt rock scene was 'us' up there doing it, it was the punk ethic without the yobbishness.

"deedee doodoo dahdoodahdoo"

Lol! I just realised what you were doing.

And most people are just yobs. It took me a long time to warm up to grunge because the constant navel gazing also seemed pretty darn affected.

Sorry, wrong use of the word.

* The constant navel gazing seemed like an affectation.
