@rabidfish I love Messiah, one of Godflesh's most underrated releases.

you guys do be right about "You Are the Judge The Jury and The Executioner" it do be hittin'... cathartic and the atmosphere is just unparalleled on that one - sick closer

Yeah this thread has seen some weird takes but that takes the cake by far.
That says something about a band with a diverse discography! As much as I don't care for this album I can honestly say its refreshing to have debates about best and worst. I tend to go back and listen to complete band discog's start to finish and sometimes find a gem in the mix that was never quite present.

"I love Messiah, one of Godflesh's most underrated releases."
Indeed! Messiah rules hard. One of my fav too.
This one grew on me a bit but I still don't get Army of Non, most cliché Godflesh song ever. I removed it from my rip lol

why that song is dope

Idk, it's like a B class Godflesh song which sounds cliché af to me. There are none of those small Godflesh variations in its repetitive verses. It even sounds somehow like an interlude to me, but maybe that was the point.
Permission on the other hand rips the hardest to me. The Father and Army of Non are my least fav.

Naah the bounce on Army Of Non is a keeper groove for sure.

Make an EP out of Nero, LandLord, Army Of Non, Mythology Of Self, and Judge/Jury/Executioner and you get a 4.0.
Lazarus Leper is good, but it's too repetitive. Almost feels like a B-side from Post Self.
Permission starts off really fun with the drum and bass vibes but doesn't develop enough from there. The Father is just grating.
Overall I'm definitely happy that we got an album as opposed to nothing but it's a little disappointing knowing just how good Godflesh can be.

Still an impressive showing. Props to Godflesh and NIN for going strong with great industrial albums across five different decades.

gabba, what are your ratings for the first two Godflesh albums?
Just bumped 'Pure' to a 5 after a long time at 4.5 and 'Streetcleaner' to a 4.5 after revisiting both just now.
|
| |
PURE over STREETCLEANER is an interesting choice, but I respect it.
I think my top three would be 1. STREETCLEANER, 2. the self-titled debut EP, and 3. idk a three-way tie between PURE, HYMNS, and SELFLESS, though gun to my head I'd probably go HYMNS.

Doof, I haven’t heard those, hence no ratings so far. But I feel like I’m up for a treat!

gabba - essential stuff I'd think
tectactoe - the drums snap a bit more on 'Pure', bit more variety, guitar tone is amazing, it sounds more like 'The Established Godflesh' and the band they'd continue to be up to present day, 'Streetcleaner' is a little bit more its own thing to what comes after...anyway 'Pure' is a different sort of intense to 'Streetcleaner'...but about the same level of intensity overall.
I'll revisit the whole discog at some point, but I'll check the EP which I've skipped up to now despite its legendary rep - prob a silly thing to do.

Streetcleaner
Songs of love and hate
Godflesh EP
But it changes all the time. Probably the most consistently good band. Even their post breakup stuff is goated, arguably at the same level of most of their classic stuff.

Straight off the bat, 'Veins' rules
Songs of Love and Hate is the most hip hop influenced one right?
