New song was extremely boring and formulaic, the comparison to Ephemeral is accurate. Both singles being fairly poor does not bode well for whatever they have coming.

I wasn't the biggest Winter's Gate fan compared to most but man that is like a revelation compared to this garbage.

Every band has it's day. Insomnium circa 2002 - 2009 ain't coming back and it fucking sucks.

New song has dropped. I would argue much better than the first two singles.

Still, the band refuses to riff....

I like the new song too as far as contemporary style insomnium goes. I'm tentatively excited for the album

I would just like to point out that the sound on the youtube videos for these singles BLOWS. If, like me you've been listening there, you should try elsewhere, sounds much better.

Yeah, music video is ass.

The song is predictably workmanlike. The album is shaping up to being their weakest.

band still has a sound and approach im enjoying but does feel like the creative juices have run a bit dry and they arent pushing themselves here

The contemporary sound they churn out these days is too polished, sterile and no longer riff-driven. It just doesn't match the deep organic rain-soaked atmospheres they were known for back in the day. I call it the Vanhala effect.

It feels like they are only doing these songs/album out of obligation.

I definitely started to feel that way when I listened to Heart Like A Grave for the first time. That record felt so obligatory

Look I get the criticisms levelled towards these singles. This music is playing it safe, absolutely. I just happen to be the type of dude who enjoys established bands who hit their cruise phase after 2+ decades in the game and crank out solid workman-like songs, generally also easing off on the aggression in the music. There are so many bands I like who are currently in this phase. It's nice for me to listen to more material from them that is similar but different.

Put another way, the number of bands that just continues to improve 8,9 LPs into their career is vanishingly small. I'll just enjoy their new music for a while rather than endlessly playing the classics. I also prefer this than a hard pivot into other genres which immediately falls flat.

Anno for instance is a very well realized concept, and I enjoy it for the easy to follow narrative in the songs, along with the recognisable sound of Insomnium's take on melodeath.

Tend to agree. I enjoy most new stuff from legacy bands bands and don’t pine for the old stuff. Chances are I’ll dig new Insomnium

Maybe they got inspired by Bad Omens or something

i'm ok with bands that hit their cruise point provided they still incorporate the elements that made them enjoyable in the first place - none of these songs have an emotional hook or good riff

yeah man i'm extremely underwhelmed. that said, the singles for this blew and the longer deep cuts were the highlights, so i just hope they're saving the best for the album proper.

i still think godforsaken on this is one of the best tracks they've done in a very long time and the other long cuts on this rule too - shame about the rest.

Idm when bands hit cruise control and are vibing (My Dying bride comes to mind here) but the problems when the songs feel so devoid of energy or ideas and have a by the numbers feel.
