i don't really care about anthony fantano anymore. i loved his sunbather review. He adored the first three songs on that album and put it at like 150 in his 500 best albums of the 2010s. But he gave OCHL a 5/10 (an album i actually love) and now this is a 3? come on anthony lol
Don’t hate Melon for speaking facts.

Yeah I can’t see a 1 for this at all. It’s all dramatics and theatrics. They know it bothers you and they like it. They’re secretly listening to Shellstar anyway.

It's a good way to take care of the precious Objectivity score! I have to do this, listen to every black metal album out there and start throwing 1's and 2's out there because I can't enjoy it. /jk

Yeah Idc about it either, my scores are always kinda positive unless a band I like drops a shit album or smth and usually don't listen to entire albums of things I don't dig because I know after a few songs if something will hit me or not.

'doof- im wondering if that is an issue of the vocals or the songwriting structure?'
yeah, I'm only saying this is close to a weakness on the first listen, the song writing isn't so distinct it is blowing me away, plus the shoegaze sound isn't one I'm so in love with that I'll like an album irrespective of it at least being partly unique and memorable.
I think I'm saying this album certainly sounds 'good' but I'll only know on listen three if the songs justify coming back to. I'm pleased Deafheaven released a more straightforward shoegaze album...though it should probably not be a direction they go and release three or four albums in the style. Will need to keep mixing it up.

I just think we need to talk about how this is the best Shoegaze album to come from a black metal band really all last decade. As much as I love Shelter. This is honestly well above that. People wanna say it sounds like this band and that band and bill disagree with you til the day I die. To me: this sounds like Sunbather and Before the Dawn Heals Us had a baby with a surrogate vocalist but seen through the filter of M83. And if someone can recommend me that to give me vibes I’d appreciate it because Wildhund and Nothing and Morrissey and AFI aren’t it. They’re still blazing a trail and people hate that.

see, thats an interesting point because sometimes the biggest haters are lovers of prior albums... the negative people are the most vocal, on the interwebs

In this case I'm kinda new to Deafheaven tho, I've listened to some Sunbather and OCHL songs but never a full album but yeah I agree with you.
