Well most songs have the main character saying "We" which I'm assuming because there is the Cockroach King and the Human personality sharing one body. But I don't know if there is a third or fourth character (Dr.Rex or Marigold).

I wish they leaned more into the atmospheric stuff like Canary Yellow and didn't default to standard prog metal soundscapes, even if the Messiah Complex suite generally works.

What do you consider standard prog metal soundscapes?

It's a joke Walrus, but Prosthetic and Messiah Complex are prog metal by the numbers, meaning that they gather all the elements that describe the genre. I like both of them (I can even defend Prosthetic) but they are standard prog songs.

Dude I'm addicted to the part at around 1:30 in Canary Yellow when the electric guitars kick in. The vocal melodies and word economy are incredible

What's a joke?
I would say that, yes, it is prog by the numbers in some cases. But when it's done incredibly well... well I guess I'm just a sucker for good prog.

@myth Wont deny that it's not atypical but tbh, after the shitshow of the late 2010s throwback prog style, I'm happy for some modern prog metal done right

I would say Pain of Salvation and Caligula's Horse are incredibly "OK" prog. But this album?... Naw man this one is a masterpiece.

That's a bad take for Pain of Salvation alone lol. I can get over people not liking C-Horse as much as I do though. And this album is far from masterpiece status.

Idk I love prog on paper and off paper a little less, but it can also fall into cheesy territory so fast. Why don't people write prog about home invasion or suicide or some shit? It's always an alien city metropolis or roach people. Haha

Have you listened to Hand.Cannot.Erase. Milliondead? You might appreciate the content matter there.
I think that prog is a lot like the Sci-fi or fantasy genre. People write it to sound smart and escape from reality.

Tbf I haven't checked it yet, just listened to the S/T sequel. That being said, I did not care for their previous effort. It felt so... disingenuous.

I also meant that the songwriting can cheesy af sometimes, but there're are definitely many gems in prog rock and prog metal for sure. A lot of times it can just get tacky with how much they try to throw at a song at once. But when done with taste, it's fucking brilliant.
I haven't checked out Hand.Cannot.Erase though. I certainly will. I already dig Steven Wilson actually.
