Yeah this album is win after win. Sleep Tongue is so simple in its execution but it’s so goddamn cathartic

It’s kinda like what I always call Alcest: Shoegaze Metal. Mainly because I don’t really think there’s enough of the black to call them blackgaze.

lol I mean they arguably pioneered the blackgaze genre, but who really cares about genre tags other than helping to categorize music better for people to discover.

On a serious note yeah it’s hardly important. I just feel like bm isn’t as prominent in Alcests sound as peeps think it is.

I’m listening to Realms again and I feel like it’s really underrated. It’s an awesome ep.

I’m probably not qualified to weigh in on this, but most of this sounds like the parts of Alcest songs that aren’t specifically blackgaze (agreed with Mongi that there are aspects of that in most of their music but it’s often not their overriding sound), which is to say it’s a mix of shoegaze/dream pop and post-metal/post-rock, which one could indeed probably simplify as something like “post-shoegaze.” Honestly I don’t even hear that much metal here though. It’s not really doomgaze imo, I feel like it’s not harsh/heavy/depressive enough for that.

Yeah this album is a cohesive and complex combo of all that stuff. It’s so rare to see that 😁

It’s a great sound for sure, though after 2 spins the songs are kind of blending together still, but I look forward to digging into this more and maybe checking their EPs before the new album drops.

I kinda agree, which I acknowledge is the albums only flaw, but it ends up working for me because it’s the kinda atmosphere I end up sinking into. It comes to a head with Sleep Tongue I loooove it.

Yeah, blending together isn’t always a bad thing, especially with this kind of atmospheric music.

One funny thing though, the first time I listened I wasn’t paying super close attention to track transitions and I didn’t even realize the last track had started until several minutes in since it starts ambient just like the previous track.

Yeah the ending flows so nicely and that ambient section is so naturey

Could just be the cover art palette but a lot of this does remind me quite a bit of Voyages era Alcest. In a good way though, it’s certainly not a copycat.
