If you say that Dirt is generally considered by critics as AiC's best, then I'm willing to take that as fact.
Master of Puppets is generally touted by critics as Metallica's best, and it's not my fave album by them.

As I said before...
It is an OBJECTIVE fact that more people like Dirt to Jar of Flies.

@Sitar: Well for starters, unlike most people I love Ann Wilson's backups in "Brother" and thinks she helps to convey the mood of the song. It's often caught in my head and I really like the lyrics. It's my favorite because of how it affects me, not because of how it effects others.
Out of Alice in Chain's entire catalogue, it does the best job at making me appreciate it. For me, it's truly somber and magnificent. As much as I can understand people not liking it, I'm still surprised that there's a majority who don't. I just think it's better overall.
I don't mind when people have different favorites as mine as much as I mind when everyone has the same favorite. The worst part is that people think I hate Dirt because it's not in my top 2. But no, I like all of 90s AiC, I just prefer some
albums to others.
"guys, everyone knows Dirt is AiC's best. No point in arguing that"
Dude, you missed the entire debate. We've already proved that there's point arguing the worth of all art.

So you don't hate Dirt then? Understood

In fact, here's an unconventional opinion I have:
I'm not a big fan of Jimmy Page's guitar playing (and I like Led Zeppelin). I respect the man and all, but to me Zep was more about Bonzo, JPJ and Plant than it was about Page. A lot of people say Stairway to Heaven is the best guitar solo in rock history. I beg to differ, although I can see why many would put it on that pedestal.

@danny: wow I really hate that opinion... but to refrain from being a hypocrite all I can say is that I respect that. You're not wrong, you just have a different opinion. Though in MY opinion, the guitar to "The Wanton Song" is flawless.
@Green Baron: I have Dirt as a 4, so of course not. But I have Sap and s/t as 5's

"Thinking better musicianship means better music is still subjective."
Greater technical ability, ie mindless shredding, does not ipso facto make something better than something simple, but the added use of complexity and shades of grey and colour definitely adds to the picture if you use them well. To evoke different and more complex emotional responses than just hammering out two or three chords with varying loudness.

@Sitar Hero: Yet I still prefer The White Stripes to any technical death metal band.
Explain that without using objectivity.

But do you prefer The White Stripes to Opeth?

Not questioning something is opening yourself up to blind ignorance. You must question everything if you wish you understand.
|

Which one is the shit band in that scenario, Sitar? I thought White Stripes and Opeth were both great.

Neither are shit, but Opeth is 'better'. :D

Nope. I keep saying I don't like growling vocals. I prefer The White Stripes and I'm sure you all respect me less for saying that ;) Kidding about the second part, but yeah I prefer TWS to Opeth.
