Idk but I remember reading an interview with Robin and he definitely made it seem like Tillman was a pretty toxic part of the group. Not surprising cuz the guy is competely fucking unsufferable imo.
And sorry boney this album is miles better than HB.

Sure, the band environment might've been affected by him and possibly even the songwriting on Pecknold's part. I'm not a big fan of Tillman, though I haven't tried too often getting into Father John Misty, but it's pretty clear that Fleet Foxes is where it's at.
I still can't decide if this or HB is better.

Father John Misty > Fleet Foxes tbh. Every Fleet Foxes album is great but I Love You Honeybear is a classic.

It's about as good as this and if condensed to the same length as this would likely be better.

I heard some of Father John Misty and I enjoyed it so I'll probably check it soon

Same. I already know the project isn't superior to Fleet Foxes though; I remember it being like folk satire.

They're not even comparable but it is superior
Yeah he uses satire and humor but to convey serious themes and his music is gorgeous too. Honeybear on the whole is more relatable and emotionally resonant than anything FF has done. Helplessness Blues is pretty emotional but even that has a level of emotional obscurity that slightly blocks it from having a huge impact.

I'm most of the way through I Love You, Honeybear. It's very good but not as great as any Fleet Foxes imo

Lyrics are juicier, they really come into their own after multiple spins

FJM uses irony and satire to cover up his poor songwriting, it's pretty obnoxious tbh.

He's an amazing songwriter though, ILYHB has some of the best lyrics of the decade
Robin Pecknold is a decent lyricist too but he sometimes gets too bogged down in anachronistic imagery
Not to shit on Fleet Foxes though because I love them too

The lyrics are witty and entertaining but didn't strike me as brilliant or anything. There's a lot more depth and beauty to Fleet Foxes.
I'll listen to more Father John Misty in the future, because I did enjoy I Love You, Honeybear.

I agree with it being top 1000 of the decade.
My top 5 of the decade: 1) The National - High Violet 2) Alcest - Ecailles 3) Steven Wilson - Hand. Cannot. Erase. 4) Nick Cave - Skeleton Tree 5) The National - Sleep Well Beast

Something like 'Kaputt', 'Trouble Will Find Me', 'Benji', 'Flotus', 'High Violet'...something from 2017 might gatecrash that lot

For me it's something like:
1) High Violet 2) Jason Isbell - Southeastern 3) Trouble Will Find Me 4) Phosphorescent - Muchacho 5) Honeybear OR Decemberists - The King is Dead

Trouble Will Find Me isn't far behind my top 5. Can pretty confidently say The National are the best band of the decade so far.

finally revisiting this after a cursory listen upon release and I think the reason this never grabbed me is because it doesn't feel coherent at all. It's just like a string of pretty choruses randomly thrown together
idk maybe it'll click eventually?
