I do appreciate Magic Mountain for its instrumental coda...this album is so loaded with verbiage that a nice instrumental stretch is needed for me at that point

ppl who said birdie should b taken off make me sad. it's a great tune, on a side note- it feels like a continuation of the second half in reservations by wilco... they feel sonically parallel.

dream - I was gonna say there's something very Jim O'Rourke going on with the music here

The amount of praise this is getting is crazy. I mean, it's a competent album, but a 87 critics score average? Goddamn dude, chill

Birdie is fine Dream but it's not quite a highlight, perhaps it'll grow on me though.
@rabid, I mean the critics loved Honeybear too so it's not all that surprising.
On a side note, I don't know if this was intentional on klap's part, but I love how his score is just high enough that it shows up as green instead of yellow on metacritic.

If this is the high bar for 2017, it's going to be a miserable year for music lovers

yeah true doof. i associate jim more with the sy record murray street, forgot he worked on yhf; how could i? that thing is my favorite album of all time.

You should associate Jim O'Rourke with his own stuff because it's pretty damn great too.

haven't jammed his solo work yet, i'm sure it's rad

I haven't actually heard his pop albums yet (I plan to soon though) but the American Primitivism Bad Timing and the one-song chamber folk suite The Visitor are both wonderful.

Anthracks you seem to have rated any old 2017 albums 4+ (Japandroids, Mastodon, etc)...chill with this release, it's really no worse than the aforementioned from a more neutral standpoint. You seem to have approached this with the largest chip on shoulder in human history.

Doof what are you thinking for an actual rating on this? I'm still stuck on what to rate it in the 3-4 range - it's a hell of a lot to digest.

abandon the "must 5 everything" mantra, agreed

Anthracks gave the new Japandroids album 4.0+? Jesus Christ, that shit was 2.0 tops. Disappointment of the year.

lol boney, not intentional on my part. actually think metacritic giving green to everything down to a 61 is too much green imo

this is like the worst year of music in over a decade, lol. i have like four albums at 4+ out of the 200 albums i've listened to so far. i approached this thinking i would love it because honeybear was one of my favorite albums of 2015. i pre-ordered it months ago. but keep assuming things idc
and you can try to paint my ratings a certain way by saying i rated jpndrds "4+" when i have it at 75/100 (lowest cutoff for a 4 rating) on RYM. talk about a chip on my shoulder when you're going through my ratings with a magnifying glass, lol
