"casey is obviously a very talented singer, and this album is beautifully composed, but it just seems...indulgent. it's TRYING so hard to be so much. i just feel like it lacks soul. it's dramatic to the point where i'm unable to relate to it. there are parts in which casey's vocal melodies seem to meander for the sake of meandering, in a way that strikes me as indulgent. most of the album has this overblown vibe, to me."
As mentioned already, that's kind of the point. It's not supposed to induce feeling, it's meant to expose and exaggerate it - Identifying how over dramatic it is is the easy part, understanding why it is that way is another. I find the tones used in this album are a collection of tones that I mostly dislike - however, the chaotic perfection adds to the atmosphere which in turn creates the most unique experience. I completely understand the difficulty to relate, this album is not an easy one to comprehend fully.

I quite enjoyed reading his first comment/rant, although Sput is more pretentious than salty.

It's The Dear hunter... have you ever listened to them before?

I've listened to acts 2 and 3 and seen them live yeah
this second song feels deservedly massive tho

I feel like every element that they use in their song is used exactly as you'd expect it to sound like in cliche
like 'here's some bossa nova, here's some twinkly keys, here's an organ'
like there's not a whole lot of real innovation going on, it's just kind of like a likeable amalgamation on things that work, which is fine but it's surprising considering how critically lauded this band is
Like, compare this to Illinois or something where it feels like you're being attacked by flutes just popping out of fuckin nowhere but somehow it totally works

I don't think I'm going to rate this right away I think since I'm most likely going to be undecided between 3.5 and 4 but I have absolutely no problem with someone rating this album after one listen tbqh
It's just a collection of songs, this is no bitches brew like you guys are acting it is lmao. Songs might grow on you or grow off of you but ultimately they're all songs with melody and lyrics and there isn't exactly things I'm not going to notice until multiple listens you know
wwf, deconstruction pretension with pretension since 2013

"Songs might grow on you or grow off of you but ultimately they're all songs with melody and lyrics"
TIL no album containing songs with melody and lyics is deserving of a 5.
You kind of talk as though you think we don't realise what the album actually is or that our view of it is clouded or deceived by some "trickery". And you're the one-eyed king in the land of the blind.
Whether or not you agree, I consider this to be a near flawless collection of very well-crafted songs with great melodies, and great lyrics (not to mention the performances all round are stellar).
You're right, there is no secret sauce and we aren't all drinking it up like baffoons. It's just that this music is fucking fantastic and I'm sorry you don't like it as much as me.
Edit: Please don't get offended by my candor by the way. I'm not meaning to be offensive particularly, but I'm kind of tired of overly sensitive reactions to comments on the internet that spiral into outrage as of late. That's not relevant to this particular thread, just a broader observation. A stranger being blunt about something on the internet shouldn't upset someone enough to cause outcry but somehow it always seems to happen. Again, not commenting on anything specific here.

no haha that's not what I'm saying at all even a little bit
literally all I'm saying is that I feel like rating this on first listen is perfectly justifiable
if you love this, I'm happy for you man, and I'm glad that this band seems to have a fanbase that supports them enough to make albums that are as ambitious as this. it's a genuinely great album
I'm just surprised that their albums are always so, soooooo well received
like, this band seems totally up my alley and I just can't get into them as much as most

I edited my previous comment before seeing that you'd already replied to me, by the way, but I was glad to see that you didn't react badly to what I said lol.

Speaking of fanbase support, it amazes me that small-ish bands like this manage to afford everything that they do, both monetarily and in terms of time investment. It must cost a lot to produce what The Dear Hunter produce. That's not to mention the two overseas tours they did within the last year. I know Casey builds guitars to make money but even then it amazes me that he has the time to build enough to make a living whilst producing Act IV, Act V and his classical symphony in just the last few years. Some people are really productive and motivated I guess. I think one only needs to look at Casey in order to feel wholly inadequate regarding ones own accomplishments.

this is sort of the best time and worst time ever to make music like this
making great sounding albums is cheaper than ever, but it's less profitable than ever
