I listened to this today and realized that the band almost never repeats the same musical phrase more than once. And since, by definition, a riff has to repeat at least once, I've concluded that this band doesn't actually write riffs. Their songs are composed of "licks", which are standalone musical phrases.
If you think I'm wrong, please kindly let me know. Don't be mean. I'm just trying to understand music composition better, and this album threw me for a loop today.

You bring up a valid point, I never thought of it that way. Certainly one could say that this is almost entirely comprised of licks, although my thinking was that a lick is basically a small phrase done by the lead rather than full passages like they do on here. Take Indigo for example; a lot of the phrases are repeated such as the tapping lead and the frequent chord changes in the verses.
However I do see where you're coming from, as a lot of these ideas that Keaton throws down are either only done once, or he plays a variation of the phrase later on in the song. The best I can say is that Keaton comes up with a lot of riffs as well as licks to compliment them.
Taking Soul Sleep as another example I'd say that the song is made up of separate riffs in the verses, and a repeated riff in the chorus with the lead (although maybe that's a lick?). Dead Roots opening riff is most certainly a big dick riff rather than a lick

@Steak I've seen conflicting definitions of what a musical lick is. I initially also thought it was just a quick phrase done by the lead guitar, but apparently it can also be a short, unrepeated passage comprising of all the instruments.
