This songs like Opeth if they actually did prog-ish rock right.

Most of all, it reminds me of Riverside, but there's also some Opeth in here, yeah

I don't know, I keep hearing certain melodies and textures that remind me a lot of them. Granted, I'm not a huge prog rock fan, so if they sounded like anyone else, I wouldn't know.

Some external influences yes (Porcupine Tree I'd say) but they managed to make them their own.

I remember reading somewhere that Renkse and Nystrom wanted to go into this direction in the past but were always restricted in a way or another. If this new album (and line-up change) means that we are entering a new era in this direction I couldn't be happier. They never sounded this good as a band

"Darling

You had me here for a while

It breaks my heart to see you cry"

God, I hate that part. But that's pretty much the only thing.

Maybe Decima would have worked better as an instrumental coda for Old Heart Falls. 2:30~3:10 is beauty

Something about the word "shifts" sounds sweet for the music

I love me some Opeth. Is this a good place to start with this band?

yeah I wasn't serious

@bananatossing: If you like prog metal-ish stuff, I think it is. Last Fair Deal Gone Down is the perfect place to start with Katatonia in general though.

"I love me some Opeth. Is this a good place to start with this band?"

Give a shot to the track "Last Song Before the Fade", it's arguably the most intense one here and there's a good probability of you getting hooked.

"yeah I wasn't serious"

It was a cute thought anyway

Banana if you want something that sounds a lot like Opeth, Brave Murder Day is probably the best place to start. You can't go wrong with these guys, though.

I started with The Great Cold Distance and was instantly hooked, but coming from Opeth maybe is better to start from early stuff like Sab and Ocean said.

Rik and Ocean you meant. :D

By the way Bruce Soord, the guy behind the 5.1 stuff, is also involved in the upcoming anniversary edition of The Great Cold Distance.

And yeah I knew about the 5.1 version of TGCD. Too bad I don't have a system. I guess it will be optimized for surround headphones too?
