perhaps it's a little too subdued but some of the tracks are gorgeous - 'endless ways' is the highlight for me, and i love how 'ghosts' has so many resemblances to 'frozen' by madonna, as weird as that feels to point out

also, i would very much like an orange juice

The production on the new one is different than the last couple releases. I love the sound. It's more "crunchier".

"same formula with a little electronica sprinkled in"

That's pretty much what I expected. The Anathema of old that changed pretty much with every album seems a distant memory

lee douglas, sister of the drummer, she's been contributing to their albums for ages but became a permanent member WHBWH onwards

i may not have keyed in to it the way some of the other users have, but just listening to it around the house.....sounded like the same vain

she's great on everything she's contributed to, she's a tremendous vocalist.

for me atm the new album sits somewhere in the middle of weather systems and distant satellites, i think it's just a touch too subdued for them and i don't think the concept works as effectively as they think. still some stellar tracks on there though.

wiki paste:

The album reportedly follows the concept of the band's 2001 release A Fine Day To Exit. According to band members Daniel and Vincent Cavanagh, the idea came from writing a narrative, culminating on what must have happened with the guy from that album cover. Vincent commented that "The guy who disappeared – you never knew what happened to him. Did he start a new life? Did he succumb to his fate? It was never explained. The opening track title is the exact coordinates for Silver Strand beach in San Diego – the last known location of The Optimist – shown on the cover of A Fine Day to Exit".[2] The covers of both albums also show its narrative connections, as the former contains a car in an empty beach during the day, and the later a car in a road at night.

I should look more into the lyrics of both albums. A Fine Day to Exit isn't their best album, but it's still excellent and underrated. The final two songs in particular have a lot of meaning and nostalgia for me.

Yeah. Of course the new album is in the vein of the previous three (I don't even know why someone would expect differently at this point), but it's got plenty of nice touches of its own.

i expected them to continue to evolve their sound Evo.....i'm not disappointed with the music though, pretty good record.

Leaving It Behind is a terrible song imo, particularly because of the vocal style.

It's more different from WHBWH than WS was, so there's that.

So I haven't listened to the album but understand why the band didn't take many risks when it came to the last two albums. They had a 7 year hiatus and released a critically acclaimed album, so they would want a stable trajectory and not risk throwing newer fans off. But it's been 3 albums since WHBWH, time to revive the Anathema spirit of changing the sound up

They do with the new one, I mean it's not out of left field but it sounds more nocturnal and subdued than the last three did.

Cliche but the new one does sound "heavier" , emphasis on bass , deeper drums. I am so glad too.
