I'm gonna jam this tonight in preparation for the new one. Only Insomnium I haven't jammed yet.

Not gonna matter tbh, still probably gonna be AOTY regardless of what sound they decide to go for

It would be. I still think that the best sound they've ever had was on ATWW

The new song is easily their best ever, IMO. It is easily the pinnacle of Insomnium's sound. The best of their melodic death metal sound mixed with progressive tendencies, acoustic guitars, and even a few black metal-ish moments. The clean singing, too, finally works for the band in a way it never has in the past. Not a single wasted moment in the entire 40 minutes. I still have the Fates Waring album rated as my number 1 of the year, but Insomnium's new song is easily my number 2.

--Willie I "borrowed" the promo (sorry :/ )and I have to agree it rules--

Ha ha. I think they finally got off their ass and lived up to their potential. I'm curious about what Crysis might think. He loved these guys.

I figure what they've always needed was a good producer, and now that they've got Dan Swanö doing the engineering, they've absolutely found that. Your description has me even more hyped, Willie.

damn trey, might as well write a soundoff ;)

I need to dig a little further into the concept, and hopefully it will click with me more on the 2nd listen. My favorite Insomnium is still Above the Weeping World, so it would be cool if they could match/top that.

Giving a listen to the new one now, about 5 min in and so far so good. Basically if it has acoustic guitars and lots of riffage I'll be pleased.

EDIT - To me this is far different from anything they've ever sounded like. Sure, it's still melodic death metal but this is not the Insomnium I've known. I don't mean that in a bad way necessarily. It's just... very distinct and unusual in just how progressive the songwriting is and what the overall mood feels like.

I really want to read the story Winter's Gate is based on, but yeah I'm digging it so far. I agree with xeno's soundoff...they used a lot of restraint on the new one (edit: maybe a little too much restraint though)
