It's too bad Phase 2 is a complete waste of time.

"At least with these he is (or rather he's trying to be) ironic and playful so they don't hurt as much as some of his Deadwing ones or "Don't Hate Me". But yeah agreed his 1996+ lyrics are generally bad."
This is exactly why I find his lyrics far more bearable during this psych period than on later albums. Plus it helps that there is less of a focus on the lyrics during early PT.

more than bearable
We lost the skyline
We stepped right off the map
Drifted in to blank space
And let the clocks relapse
We laughed the rain down
Slow burn on the lawn
Ghosts across the delta
Swallowed up the storm
i love these. they're nonsensical, but at the same time full of melancholy and nostalgia. lyrics that were intended to have no meaning but feelings leaked into them anyway, subconsciously. funny how these feel more authentic and emotional (not even mentioning better written) than when he was intentionally trying to be a singer-songwriter during the Stupid Dream/Lightbulb Sun period.
have you ever listened to bass communion Jamie? I think you'd actually love pieces like "16 Second Swarm" and "Drugged".

I definitely agree that those lyrics are better on all levels than his more 'serious' writing.
I've heard very few bits and pieces of BC's stuff here and there, certainly not enough to judge. I'll check out the two songs you suggested.

nice! let me know what you think (also i meant the first part of "Drugged")

Stars Die is fantastic. I hardly think this was less serious writing here. I genuinely love the lyrics here.

the thing with his lyricism nowadays is that he's writing as if he's writing a story or talking to someone. I certainly don't mind, I like the direct and intimate feeling.

The lyrics here are mostly just psychedelic mumbo jumbo. Definitely a lot less serious than his later writing but they work all the better for it.

if only those stories were well-written...

I find them to be, though. He doesn't repeat himself in a song, meaning he doesn't say ''I feel bad because of the girl that left me and the days are now long and I can't sleep thinking that girl that left me.'' In this sense, his lyrics are well written. One of the best examples of his dexterity I can think of right now is Postcard: he speaks as if to a friend or to an observer or on the phone. He expresses feelings and narrates without giving the cause of his sadness, only on the final line. Because he speaks more of feelings and thoughts, rather than their roots and causes, one can easily identify with him.

he doesn't make some of the most basic mistakes therefore his lyrics are well-written. some proper logic right there!

It's not just that I'm talking about. I also talk about precision describing feelings and situations. Don't pretend not to understand or make a fool out of me.

ehh, his songwriting style comes off as straight up blunt, which no matter what the topics are makes the lyrics seem rather corny
