Rowan, I dunno if you know but Gilmour didn't write the majority of lyrics on AMLOR and TDB, he had outside people do it (eg Anthony Moore, his girlfriend Polly Sampson). Gilmour believes that 'Sorrow' from AMLOR is one of his best efforts lyrically, for a reference point. Besides that, a lot of fun to read and definitely an underrated album.

I know that he had outside people come in to assist with it, but I don't think that they wrote the majority of it (from what I know anyway). Most of the songs on the albums are credited to both Gilmour and one of the outside peeps (For example On the Turning Away is Gilmour and Moore) not just the outsiders. If I'm making any sense at all. Anyway, a lot of the songs are credited to just Gilmour regardless

Ah I dunno the exact number for the songs that he had outsiders. There's only one on TDB credited just to him, tand a bunch that say Gilmour/Sampson

Yeah Coming Back to Life is that song
Most of them were Gilmour/Wright on music and then Gilmour/Samson on lyrics, although Wearing the Inside Out was Wright on music and Anthony Moore on lyrics
Otherwise I would guess that a lot of the lyrics are Gilmour's

Regardless of who wrote the lyrics it's a real good album, and as has been said many times, High Hopes is an amazing song that stands with their best. On another note Childhood's End and Sorrow have great lyrics/music, and those are 100% Gilmour

Completely agreed about High Hopes, and I love Lost for Words EVEN MORE :0
Childhood's End is fantastic yeah, especially when you consider the only lyrics Gilmour had ever written beforehand were The Narrow Way's lyrics (not counting A Spanish Piece here) which were pretty bad, he nailed it on Childhood
Actually having said that, I'm not sure if he wrote the lyrics for Fat Old Sun

Murder from his About Face album is another one with great lyrics/music, although the album as a whole is rather 80's sounding.
I think he did Fat Old Sun as well, although I think it's not as good as the others lyrically. Ultimately I think Waters was a more prolific writer, particularly when the entire band would flesh out the music

Yeah I love Murder, beautiful song
Decent album, far from bad although I much prefer On an Island
I dunno, I think Fat Old Sun does a great job of capturing that nostalgic feeling through its lyrics, although they may not be outstanding on their own. But yeah Waters was THE lyricist always no arguments there

On An Island is way better as a whole, yea. Actually Wright has 2 great solo albums too, and 1 shit one. The solo albums really give you a glimpse at who was good at what and how when all the parts worked well, it made extraordinary music

Oh yeah I've heard Wright's solo albums. Guessing the shit one is that collab one he did under the Zee name? .....yeah that was horrible
Broken China is absolutely fantastic

Yea the Zee one lol I guess it's not a 'solo' album but it was just awful.
Broken China is really good, although I don't think it's mentioned very often which is a shame. It's like his magnum opus

Yeah I've recommended it to a few people here on Sputnik but it still gets almost no attention. Damn shame
Rick was just a magician and the most criminally underrated member of any band as popular as Floyd that I can think of
Broken China just has this crazy depressing atmosphere
Seen this? because omg http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Rnn2cV9NHA

Its fantastic. The version on Broken China is already one of his best songs but that one just goes the extra mile
