Also, it's one of the hardcore underrated pleasures of this band to see them strip some of the songs down and perform them acoustically. It really shows of just how good they are as musicians and songwriters. I hope they actually do an acoustic album at some point.

"For instance, a track like Coming For You has the same kind of kitchen sink approach, but never sounds jarring. There are parts of One Hand Killing that just have TOO much going on simultaneously to be truly catchy. "
interesting take. i see the parallels between Coming For You and One Hand Killing (i think that was intentional by the band as a first single), but I feel like OHK is a little more simple and straightforward than CFY.
but hey, we're essentially debating which cake is sweeter. dey both delish brah.

"which makes me wonder if they had the 'sound' of Outlier all planned out, then realized people might not the change.. then made One Hand Killing as track 1/first single to put people as ease"
I don't hear Outlier as having a different sound than the rest of their output, it's just that Silent Machine flows better as an album due to the different pacing of the material, whereas most of the songs on Outlier are on the same wavelength(by TFN's standards). I think that if it had been released as two EPs, those would have been received better.

saw some discussion on this so I figured I'd finally jam it since I've had in my itunes library for like a year now. I wasn't too disappointed for the most part but the vocals.. I'm not sure if they're gunna grow on or off me I didn't mind them on first listen but they may either grow on or off for me. For now a 4 but may go either way boys as far as going down a bit or going up a bit.

Funny thing about the vocals. At first I wasn't overly enamored of them, but over time I realised just how amazingly good Kin (the vocalist) is at writing melodies and hooks. He's the unsung (pun not intended) star of the show.
"but hey, we're essentially debating which cake is sweeter. dey both delish brah."
True dat. I love every song by this band...except Monsoon.

Yeah, Kin's perfect for the band. His vocal arrangements are about as good as any I've ever heard and he's got the versatility to keep up all the genre-hopping, sounding great all the while.

Yeah and his stylistic shifts are so subtle too. I've gotten so used to vocalists doing the sing/scream thing that someone who actually uses subtle shading in his vocal tones seemed a bit boring at first, but it turns out that with the rest of the band making such headspinning stylistic shifts his vocals anchor the songs and keep them on track.

hmm interesting way of putting it that does seem to be the one thing that holds it all together you make a valid point, I do enjoy the vocals and like I said they may grow, he does do a nice job of staying consistent while still blending like a chameleon with the stylistic changes.

I think theres some nice inflections he does I just wish he pushed his range of pitches more (maybe he doesn't have the ability?) I feel like there are many points where it feels like he's holding back. One prime example I love the chorus of Mother Sky but I feel like there could be moments when the chorus repeats where he could push his pitch range a bit more to give it more 'umph'. I just feel like there are many times here where the vocals fail to build up or explode in the same way the instrumentals do. There are so many times here where I just keep expecting an outburst in the vocal department and I guess that's sort of a let down for me. Songs like Kingdom do it with the screams but idk those outbursts don't happen enough imo.

I know what you mean. He's definitely not a run of the mill high tenor metal vocalist, and I think that's a big part of what makes the band unique. A smooth and controlled approach rather than soaring flashy attention-grabbing. But he really does have a beautiful voice when you really listen to it and he rarely sings an unmemorable note. It's all the more apparent when you strip back the instruments. As I've said before, I REALLY love their acoustic renditions.

Personally Outlier didn't have the impact on me that this one did. This one is just fucking great though. One of the most fun albums of my life.
