Outstanding album, and certainly one of the band's best. The atmospherics bring to mind The Gathering but they are lush and beautiful in a somewhat different way. Both parts of 'Untouchable' and 'Lightning song' are obvious highlights but every song is just as good in terms of quality as any other. The female vocals on here work very well too and flow beautifully with the music.

Very awesome, the whole SILENCE SILENCE building up towards the solo, words cannot describe the intensity of that part and the song as a whole, beautiful. So simple yet so powerful..... well for me anyway :-D. Vinny's best vocal performances are on the latest 2 albums.

absolutely. who would have thought those The Silent Enigma's moans would actually turn into such beautiful singing.

I hear ya. But I love every facet of his singing. I used to think those moans were ridiculous and weird (and they still are weird at times :P), but there's so much character and passion in all of his singing styles and they fit the music so well.

Moans were great, the problem was live. That A Vision of a Dying Embrace DVD was painful to hear his voice.
But yeah, Anathema is the ultimate emotional band much because of his vocal lines.

Formulas are the boundaries into which creativity is displayed. No formula can obscure a great work of art, it will shine through nontheless. So, the dilemma formulaic vs. emotional doesn't even arise here. In my opinion, it is just because of an implicit associaton by exclusion you make up in your own mind that this two elements can not coexist. Moreover, the apparent takeover, so be it, of form over emotional unpredictability, does indeed lead the way to more subtler forms of emotion that lie within the form, even beyond the musical form itself. The problem is, it depends on your own sensibility whether you will pick it up or not.

I don't have so much problem with his voice on the DVD. But the guitar of Danny gone out of tune many times :P

Yes it's surprising how often it happens

Keep coming back to this album, great stuff.
What kind of bugs me though how Lee Douglas sings a few more lines at the very end of Untouchable Part 2 after the climax. Sounds very misplaced and unnecessary to me.

We here... was their best album up to date. Also this is a new great one. I give a rating of 5 stars because good music is rare nowadays, let's be honest. You cannot rate this album with 4 just because is not your favorite Anathema album and let's say that many of that people still want the roughness of the old band. I'm so glad Anathema went progressive, because this is the territory where you can easily explore a lot. Very modern sound also.

i don't 5 albums just because they are better than the majority of albums today... album is a 5
because it is really important to me and is subjectively so damn awesome both musically and lyrically.

Yes the song structures could have varied and the production and mix could have been a little better but this album makes up for thee shortcomings with it's passion, and loads of it. I can't give it less than 4.5 for that reason. Also The Beginning and The End is probably the bands best song imo.
