Seeing these songs played live made this album amazing for me.

"I honestly hate the metal scene in Calgary. Most of the shows round here bring out some of the biggest doochebags ever. The Mastodon, Dethklok, Converge and High on Fire show was the worst crowd I've ever experienced other than Cancer Bats, Johnny Truant and Black Lungs. There are the hidden beauts tho. The crowd for Genghis Tron and Baroness was so sick, and the one for Kylesa and Intronaut was dope too. Mastodon fucked that up though. But I find the crowds round here I like the best are for some of the more low key indie shows and such. Like the Braids show, Phantogram show and above all others the Five Alarm Funk show."
dude i think every city is like that if you're talking about metal that's really well known among people who listen to metal. i thought you were talking about the local scene (and i guess "low key indie shows" like you said). our local scene is actually pretty deece as far as hardcore/metal goes (at the exception of metalcore because every metalcore scene sucks and for some reason we have a massive one). if we're talking house shows (or even all ages, i guess) our scene has it a low better than others because we actually have those frequently, minus the fact that it's always the same 30 people all the time. you have to remember a large proportion of people are douchebags and there isn't an exception within music scenes.

lols i just think it's funny when people criticize their "music scenes" (- and only talk about fairly publicized shows) solely for the shitty crowd that shows up as if that statement doesn't apply to everything ever.

Yeah, you shouldn't really expect any different. Especially at more mainstream metal shows.

Finally listening to this. Sounds like every other opeth album.

Gotta give Akerfeldt props for respecting his music and his fans enough to give us a hint that Opeth is almost over, rather than dragging it out over the next decade until he's old and gray.
Opeth is more alive than ever!Try some "Nepenthe" to get rid of the sorrow

Subjective and minimalistic review! While listening to "Heritage" consider what other new albums sound like and put Opeth in perspective. Is is really just a 3 rated album !?

Moderately enjoyable, but unremarkable.
pretty harsh word "unremarkable"...the sound and style are unique on this album as on every Opeth album.

The songs don't seem that well put together compared to many of their previous albums (excluding their very first), especially the track Famine, that one just seems like a disjointed mess; the shout outs to retro prog seem rather silly and shallow to me as well. I hope that this album is just a rough transition, but I find that doubtful since watershed had me hoping the same thing.

I'm sorry, but this album kinda sucks.

I couldn't really care less that they ditched their heavier metal side, I don't even listen to much metal anymore, it's just that this album has an extreme air of awkwardness.

Awkwardness is actually a very good word to describe it.
I still get melodies from this stuck in my head. I find myself going to Ghost Reveries instead every time I think about listening to this.

Can't listen to this album without remembering how incredible this tour was. Don't miss it if that is still an option.

Very disappointing album by a musical genius.

This isn't another Blackwater Park or Still Life, and yes it's not as focused as most of Opeth's other offerings, but it's undeniably quality material. Personally, as a big fan of Dio I can't help but love Slither ;).

I think the album's biggest sin is being boring.
Maybe it shouldn't have been released under Opeth but as a solo project:
Michael Akerfeldt and his Jazzy Prog Funkmasters! (cue in "Seinfled's" slap bass intro)
