Breaking all illusions is one of the best tracks they've ever written. For some reason I can tolerate the ballads enough to really enjoy this.

I like the ballads on this album a lot in relation to most of their other ones; Beneath the Surface especially.

Yeah, Beneath the Surface is the best ballad here
Their other ballads vary a lot, from Disappear (totally amazing) to the Silent Man (forgettable) to Take Away My Pain (lol)

Bridges in the sky is mad. But the boring drumming stops it from being that little bit better

I think a lot of people had high expectations for this album, and like me, they were disappointed to hear how 'weak' it turned out to be. I'm not saying it doesn't have its great moments-The stunning opener and 'Outcry' build up into something uniquely epic, and 'Breaking all Illusions' is enjoyable with its quirkiness. However, that is a great 30 minutes' worth of music in an otherwise bland collection of music that certainly overstays its welcome with 75+ minutes in total. 'Build me up, Break me down', 'This is the Life', 'Far from Heaven' and 'Beneath the Surface' all have the same problem for me-in that they bore the listener within mere seconds. I'm not saying this is the band's worst album, but it could well be their weakest one.

Gave this album another chance today. Still convinced that this band is dead to me now, which was expected when Portnoy left.

What others have you heard?
|
| |
1. The drums for this record were programmed by Petrucci, so Mangini wasn't really given that much freedom
2. Portnoy made DT what it is today
3. The overabundance of keyboards makes it seem like Rudess was spiteful
