Can someone just call Yoshimi and ask her to do some good old-fashioned battling with Japandroid? 'Cause you know that, it's demanding, to defeat that evil machine, but I know she can beat him. Oh, Yoshimi!
| | | robertsona tells me I suck

so, I'm actually awesome? cool cool.
| | | I dunno you both seem kind of shit
| | | robertsona said it?

Saying that reviews are purely subjective #1: facilitates massive laziness, because "hey, it's just my opinion, i can say whatever i want", and #2: renders your review rating totally worthless, because "hey, it's just opinion."
At some point, as a (somewhat) professional music critic, you have to adhere to some kind of standard of what is "good music" and what is "bad music". If "bad music" is "bad" simply because, well, "you don't like it", then nobody should take you or any other reviewer seriously ever again.

My opinion is my own, Stan, as most (good) reviews are representative of one person's opinion, and as long as I'm on Sputnik I won't attempt to achieve some modicum of "professionalism" because A) "professional" reviews like Rolling Stone's are uninteresting and uninformative and B) I'd be attempting to speak for someone other than myself, which is presumptuous and pretentious. And as for standards, I wont give a favorable review to something I don't like because it's "objectively good", which is a totally meaningless term, by the way.

Your review isn't informative. Intesting, yes. Entertaining, yes. Informative, no.
All this informs is "BAD THING". And LOL why they don't grow up? Soco Amaretto Lime, guises.
Again, I'd recommend the reading of this:
http://www.flipcollective.com/2011/06/10/you-keep-using-that-word-by-riley-breckenridge/
It's from Thrice's drummer. That's what I think ScorpionStan and me are pointing out to you: if you want to judge something, at least take your time to explain why something is good. Or why it's bad.
Then we could discuss about the record, but we can't here, can't we? Since all you had to say about it was "BAD THING".

well shit thanks!

how could this review be simultaneously too wordy and only say "BAD THING"? i think youre ignoring the
point i made, that taking back sunday delivered a turd of an album by trying to relive their glory
days and coming away with music that, while having the same basic parts of their old stuff, lacks the
subtlety that made them great. in short, they've become a bad knockoff of tell all your friends era

| | | Man, this thread.....
| | | @Electric City ("read pitchfork's review of the eminem show and talk to me about how much professionalism actually matters in internet music criticism")
Thanks, you basically made my point on how professionalism is dead, and thus any criticism towards the lack of professionalism cannot really be aimed in particular towards any one person, if the group of (professional) music critics all do the same thing.
@JapanAndroid ("That's what I say when I think reviewers should be more professionals. People may not want to listen to this because of this review. That's a really powerful thing, and should be used with care.")
You missed my point, though, because then it makes it sound as though I think he's being insincere about his review. As long as you have evidence to back your claims, you're good.
(Sorry for beating a dead horse. I was afk and kind of want to respond, but feel free to ignore this lol)

You can be wordy and at the same time not say anything. It shows you know how to write, but not that you know how to write a review - basing from this one. A review, when in depth, should be informative about its subject. Your review is lenghty about your views on the band first, when the album your actually reviewing gets a secondary role. Proving once again you spend little to no time with the record itself.
Reviews should be informative about the subject your reviewing first and from that, forming your view on the record. Don't tell me something sucks without explaining why. Unless you're judging something like Justin Bieber, than it's fair game.
| | | ^Okay, Mr. Alternate Account of JapanAndroid.
EDIT: never mind, too slow.
| | | what the fuck is japandroid still trying to accomplish fifty posts later
| | | Album Rating: 1.5
wait so taking back sunday deserves "fair treatment" but justin bieber doesn't? where's the line? is the line your opinion of the artist? because that's all youve been saying over and over this whole thread
| | | Japandroid, with all due respect, and I mean this sincerely, English clearly isn't your first language, so I'm starting to doubt your reading comprehension is up to scratch. He talks a lot about the record and why it's bad; he doesn't say "oh man this guitar bit sounds lame" and "it's a boring chorus" because those aren't his points. He explains why this record is different to the band's prior albums despite sounding similar on the surface, he explains why he thinks the overt nostalgia on display is a cop-out and he asserts in the final paragraph that a chorus which says "come back!" isn't as powerful as one which implies it. These are all very sincere points and they are all reasons why he thinks the album is, for want of a better word, forced.
If you want a review which says "Track 4 is really cool it's got this upbeat rhythm and it's about love just like other TBS songs" then it's you who doesn't understand critique and it's you who hasn't got the depth behind your reasoning.
