I've never listened to this artist. Should I start from the beginning?

It's one of the worst comments if you've had a sense of humour lobotomy maybe

well I'm playing devil's advocate here but imo he definitely improved tenfold as a song writer and particularly as a musical composer.

Of course people can 5 this, it's got a good atmosphere and a lo fi stripped down 'this could have been a set by an unheard artist in my local bar' thing going on.

Still personally think he got a hell of a lot better than this.

I just find it hard to imagine how someone could 5 this and not 5 Either/Or (think the self titled is similar but better than this one too)

I guess everyone sits somewhere different on how they rate what they like:

- Authenticity

- Virtuosity

- Progressiveness

- Originality

- Refinement

- Consistency

I think for most users here they value Originality/Progressiveness/Virtuosity a bit higher than me. I really value consistency and refinement above the others.

or maybe we just like this album more than you do without evaluating all these arbitrary factors that most people don't think too much about??

wtf are these criteria

this just has all the heart and charm and intimacy that he could never fully replicate. that said, u could make that case for any of his albums i guess but to me it's the most apparent here in his most stripped down form

I don't think that analytical when I rate, I usually just base it on how it impacted me

I've not intentionally or wittingly heard a second of an Elliott Smith song in my life but what Doof's saying doesn't exactly seem all that arbitrary or controversial seeing as all Smith's three following albums are higher rated than this in general.

Well you should do that

And that may not be a fully comprehensive list of things people consider when determining quality but we definitely all consider those to some extent even if it's not consciously so - though arguably one could consider/rank those factors differently depending on the genre or even just between separate releases in particular.

I mean everything about liking music is arbitrary to an extent anyways.

yeah but then to consciously think about these factors is kind of defeating the purpose of enjoying music in the first place

I mean I think I rarely do it when deciding what to rate something but when discussing music I do it all the time and if music discussion consisted simply of "I like this" and "I don't like this" what would even be the point?

yeah for sure, i just think if anyone is using a preset list of criteria when assigning arbitrary numbers to music they are probably thinking about it too much but hey whatever works
