For those talking about how great their old stuff was, maybe you should slip your nostalgia goggles off.

I don't like their new stuff, but at least now they mix things up a bit.

The article is acting as if LP is the only band in the world that uses this formula

Nutshell opinion.
Whomever stated or thought that "A Thousand Suns" is the next "Kid A" or even remotely thought it to be it's equivalent, seriously needs to be tossed out onto the streets and be beaten by a mob of angry Radiohead fanboy whippersnappers...I'm just saying. Personally, I thought "Kid A" had it's fair share of strengths and weaknesses as I favored "Amnesiac" in comparison. To date I still think that "Kid A" in particular is overrated and, sonically speaking, is still a difficult album to dive into. At least, for me, it still is. Ahem, I've digressed.
LP's "A Thousand Suns" sounds and rocks, and I DO use the term "rocks" very loosely here, primarily more like the following: NIN's "Year Zero", Imogen Heap's "Ellipse", U2's "No Line On The Horizon" and "All That You Can't Leave Behind". To a lesser degree it also sounds like, Audioslaves' ballads from "Out of Exile", Fear Factory's techie atmospheric sounds from "Obsolete", One Day As A Lion's flow from the song "Wild International", and traces of echos of the formula that made 311 famous on many of their albums. All these sounds and ideas in a blender = "A Thousand Suns".
LP, are not any of these aforementioned bands, hardly. If anything, LP sound more like they are going through an identity crisis, which, I happen to dig in certain artists on a case by case basis. Anyway, after multiple listens, I think LP put something together that's interesting and has a seemingly coherent theme a-la post apocalyptic era of humanity, that they are tying to convey. Definitely eons better than Hybrid Theory and Meteora. Hearing anything off those albums makes me cringe...as well as for a few songs on "Minutes to Midnight" and one or two on the new album. It certainly is not the greatest thing since the landing of say some other classic album released by a classic groundbreaking artist(s) but, in the unbiased context of what LP were, who they are now, and where they are going, I think it's a good direction. It's more of a sit down and grow-with record rather than a spoon fed rock radio friendly track-skipper kind of album, for sure.
And for criminy sakes would someone take LP out of metal!? They're more...dare I say, Alt/Rock or even Pop/Rock?
And to Mike Shinoda, If you're not careful with not sticking to your own flow, ol' Freddie D is going to blast you with,
"So WHY TRY, you're gonna die
you're going straight to the gate in the sky
with all the hate I relate to the cry
one more sucker mc gonna fry."

Linkin Park might have changed.... for better or worse.
They somewhat fail to relive their expectations but this album has a couple of solid tracks but feature way too many interludes. The bottomline is that it was made to be different and it is such that you feel you are listening to someone of the Hip-hop genre and finally when you look at the album cover you get shocked to see Linkin Park's name on it. And you think... What the f.... happened to them??? Main thing: Its very good if it was not by Linkin Park
Tracks recommended: Wretches and Kings, Robot Boy,Burning in the Skies
Thank u

Giving 3,5 to the first two and 2,5 to M2M, I think it's fair to give this a 3. The band actually progressed.

track 9 Blackout is by far my favorite, I miss the energy they once had, this track is the closest you will ever get to that again

Even though Texture is never coming back, he became a made man with that.

I have to agree with Alex here. It is really a grower. It's almost getting a bump up to a 4 soon. I dislike how it gets a lot of hate just because it's Linkin Park. If it was a different band this could easily have an average rating close to 3.5. It's not perfect, don't get me wrong, and it's definitely too short with too many interludes, but it is not a 1 or a 1.5 by any stretch of the imagination.
