Stockman's bass tone gives me reason to live [2]

The production on this is amazing in general. Has one of the best drum sounds I've ever heard. Someone mentioned the Rick Beato video on Goliath, it's definitely worth watching if anyone hasn't seen it yet.

Ian Kenny sounds like a cleaner, higher pitched Maynard. I'm quite amazed how good this album is. I stumbled upon three awesome prog albums in a row, this is a sweet streak lol. Disperse - Journey Through The Hidden Gardens, this and Steve Hackett - Voyage of the Acolyte

I've seen lots of people take issue with Kenny's vocals but I think he suits the band perfectly

I've never heard anyone bitch about Ian's vocals. I'm pretty sure it's generally agreed that he's a great singer. Like, he's in Birds of Tokyo as well and they've had pop hits in Australia, so yeah.

Dude nails it live as well.

Okay, I'll go with a 4.5 atm, but this has 5-potential. The only way to see whether or not this is a 5 is to come back to it after some time and see if it lost some appreal or grew even more. Super solid album though.

Can the rest of their discog compare to this?

even tho the follow-up is not held high in many fans' opinions, I tend to favour it a bit over this one cuz it discovers new territories and pushes them out of their comfort zone. everything before Sound Awake is more like Nu-Metal...I always hear KoRn when listening to it

also yeah, Ian nails it live. Saw them once for only half an hour at festival. they started 15mins late cuz they took their time with the soundcheck. but boy, that was worth it! such a clean, fresh sound

Themata is bit more nu-metally but still really good. The first two-thirds have some real awesome tracks but start to drag just a bit after that. Would still recommend, though.

Asymmetry, well, I'd just recommend you listen to it for the hell of it. I've still got mixed opinions

@kalk Themata is nearly as good as this, I'd give that a listen next.

Asymmetry is pretty good too and has a handful of songs on it that are on SA levels, but on the whole it's easily their weakest album. It's a bit... too prog, tbh. They take it a bit far with the dissonance, strange melodies and odd rhythms, to the point where it often just feels kinda uncomfortable. It's an interesting one for sure

I with Eclipse; Asymmetry is a really interesting experiment with a totally different sound that pushed their progressive element to another level. Despite my enjoyability faltering a bit during that album, I'll still give them credit for that.

And it's got a couple good jams too :>

Yeah, end of the day I still like Asymmetry. Title fits, but it's all done with a purpose.

But none of the songs are as good as Cote, or New Day.

Nice! It's interesting that their early days are supposed to be more nu metal. Didn't expect that when I listened to this lol

i mean its really just that first EP that has been erased from the history books, there's not much of the sound left on themata. it's more immediate and "metal" but i wouldn't rly consider it "nu metal"

Only their earliest stuff is nu-metal, really. There are only sprinklings of it throughout Themata. They're not exactly Mudvayne, ya know?

Kind of a shame Persona isn't on Spotify

We Are is their greatest, but this is their best album. The other two have fun things though.
