Oh man, it's hard to imagine being a gaze/dream pop boy without having their stuff as background knowledge (whether you like them or not).

Ok so bringing things back on track, I think I'm going start with the OG "Flicker" version but will prob check the "Vapour Trail" cover as well.

Thanks for having this conversation, been enjoying this album for 5+ years but didn't know about Flicker existed 'til seeing these comments today. There are also apparently the songs Love is Blindness, Just Like This, and Let You Down that I don't have yet either. Whatever version I've had has 11 songs plus the bonus track Different Stars (live at KCRW).

the one on Spotify is the definitive version, the one with Let You Down at the end. In a Song is the true closer but Let You Down is too good not to be heard

Oi ok it looks like the Spotify tracklist is the winner then, makes sense since that appears to be the more widely available one. Still bothers me that each version has a full 4 tracks that the other lacks and even have different closing tracks (can you even really call it the same album at that point?) but I guess I will have to just try both of the major versions and decide for myself.

Agreed Boney, I find it pretty strange and annoying. At least I have all the songs now, and it's cool that there's more of this album to discover cause it's a gem.

Alright, gave the "Vapour Trail" 2004 version an intitial pass. It's very pretty but kinda samey I guess? Certainly feels like a grower though. Not the kind of thing I'd expect Sput to give a 4.3.

Ok so this may be a bit of a hot take to say on my second listen, but this is basically a country album.

I'm exaggerating a bit but there's definitely a very twangy sound here and this definitely sounds like some other nocturnal slow female-led country acts. Some of the melodies too.
In any case though, this is really nice but I'm not finding it to be anything particularly special. It's kind of homogeneous, hard to remember how individual songs go.

maybe via 90s slowcore? theres some of that going on yeah

Yeah slowcore at that time def had a lot in common with what a lot of alt-country/folk acts were doing so it could be that. I guess it's a question of directionality.
