Both amazing and influential bands.

Not sure who is "more important" but I will say, the longer I listen to dm as a whole, the more I grow to appreciate suffocation's work. I think at this point the only death album id put over effigy or pierced personally is human, and effigy may still be better. God damn that album slays man. Might be in my top 5 dm at this point

I have a lot of nostalgia for symbolic and human, and human is still probably my favorite percussion performance over the course of an entire album RIP SEAN

to be completely fair : suffocation headlined like 75% of the deathcore tours I saw in the late 00s/early 2010s lol, but that's probably just a perk of living on the east coast. I do regret not going to see 'death to all' cause that played near me . but yeah everyone I know whose into death metal loves both bands, I just think in terms of the past decade you'll find more suffo worship than throwback death metal bands sounding like death[they usually go more for the incantation/morbid angel/obituary sound]. you'd have an occasional album like decrepit births diminishing between worlds/polarity which is unmistakenly inspired by 90s death, but that was like 2009 and I haven't heard anything since thats directly inspired by schuldiners riffage.

"em comments should be considered a public health hazard"

"death may have been influential on the early death metal movement but you are being chronically online boomers if you think most metalheads under 25 are listening to death in 2024. suffocation is 100% the more influential of the two if you don’t let your metal archives myopia take over"

"you guys must live in a parallel universe. every single person i know into deathcore and hardcore are suffocation fans and not a single one of them cares about death"

My man hyper hangs with a bunch of 21 year old deathcore loving retards that don't like death and thinks that some how means death aren't influential just cause a few of his buddies don't like the band. Some of the most ignorant comments I've seen on this site and I've seen my fair share. Especially when smok is active here lol. We're talking about a band that literally played a huge part in putting dm on map on the first place One of suffocations biggest influences. A band that largely made death metal vocals popular to begin with. Outside of death metal most metal fans couldn't tell you who suffocation is. But most of them know who death is. It's like trying to tell someone who's color blind the ocean isn't purple lol. P.s yeah jada is the man

Interesting convo sans pettiness. I'm with Shadow in that there's merit to both positions. The average DM act today sounds a lot more like Suffocation, but if we count indirect influence, then Death gets the nod for pioneering the genre. As for who's listening to what, dunno if it's a regional thing, but I've met far more 20-something y/o metalheads who'd rep Death before Suffocation, even though the latter is still touring and putting new stuff out.

i mean you can find death shirts at hot topic but anyone i've ever talked to who was super into the acacia strain: didn't know single death song lol. likewise I doubt an unapologetic scene kid knows much of suffo, but considering their touring schedule they're more likely to have seen them by accident
