The lyrics are still the greatest, the themes that are explored are timeless, the band actually had something to say and said it with a passion and ferocity that still resonates.

zak you hated this until earlier this year

You say that as though you think I don't enjoy any catchy music at all.
True. Sometimes it seems to me that you rate things based solely on how noisy, raw and basically unlistenable for an average listener something is - that includes the Justin Bieber single/whatever you dig. And here it seemed even more so to me because I understood your argument as basically: "this is catchy, popular and universally acclaimed, therefore it's bad". Glad to see I'm wrong.
I do respect some of the stuff the Clash have done with this, I just don't enjoy listening to it, nor do I find it as important as many other more genre-defining albums (append the necessary imo's to this. I also find their earlier albums to be more important than this tbh).
well that's all i wanted from you.
WJ aren't going to contribute to rock because they aren't rock
Not in the sense that Rolling Stones or Led Zeppelin are for sure but in the sense that Klaus Schulze, Diamanda Galas and Brian Eno's ambient are "rock" I'd say they fit in pretty well.
Agreed about the influence bit but influence =/= originality (although they often overlap, which is wonderful) and the latter seems like a very good indicator of how much respect you should have for an artist IMO.

I love The Clash but I thought it was the most overrated album of all time. Cheesy, assimilated nonsense that went nowhere.
I dug Clampdown, Brixton, and Train in Vain and thought the t/t was iconic as fuck but the rest was poor at best.
I couldn't have been more wrong. It's become one of me all time faves!

Just seems sketchy to me that you would call it timeless after despising its guts for so long but whaddoiknow

It's never too late for improvement. I'm glad for zak.

Tide understands (cheers man)
Rowbro I think it just spoke to me tenfold once I was married, mortgaged, middle-aged and really was working for the Clampdown.
Death or Glory, Rudie, Card Cheat they all shout in me face now whereas when I was young and angry I used to be left scratching me head thinking where had the "punk spirit" gone.

Album as a whole is overrated but my god "Spanish Bombs," "Rudie Can't Fail" and the t/t are solid gold jams
