and yeah, i think kind of blue is awesome, although miles made better records than that in my opinion (this, in a silent way, on the corner, jack johnson, get up with it and live albums like agharta, pangaea and dark magus are examples).

Coltrane's modal records are great, but free-form Coltrane is def my thing. Every single latter-phase Coltrane record is nothing less than phenomenal.

the live albums for sure yeah, i have to check out some of those others

Get Up With It in particular has one of my all-time favorite songs, the opener "He Loved Him Madly". Oh my, isn't that song absolutely immaculate. Good Lord.

I started jazz in the avantgarde and free varieties, so a lot of the more conventional styles simply bore me now. But i do find many modal cuts to be captivating as well.

There's a massive part of me that hates me saying it and I feel like I've turned into an elitist, superior wanker but Spanish Key is bloody great.

i was dumb: this jams and so by extension, fusion rulez hard obviously.
|
| |
Fusion gets a bad rap for having a lot of really crappy artists and it's true bad fusion is really really really fucking bad and obnoxious but tbh when it's good it's one of my favorite forms of jazz
|
| |
I think I actually like Miles' electric period more than his other periods surprisingly

true. most fusion i've heard ain't nearly on the same level as this tho. this is really good, might bmup. that being said, i still need to get on sun ra.
|
| |
Stuff like Herbie Hancock too, his Mwandishi trilogy (Mwandishi - Crossings - Sextant) is all top-notch fusion
That said Miles explored more or less everything that could possibly be done with fusion musically so you can just go check out his other albums (Especially his live albums) and that might just suffice, a lot of them are rly long so theres plenty of stuff to dip your fingers into
u should listen to In A Silent Way if you havent, thats my fav

Damn this IS certainly challenging to listen to. Never really had that feeling from an album before.
|
| |
Don't really find anything too challenging, to me this is pretty funky and murky and super entertaining to listen
I guess it's really exhausting due to its length, though.

More wankers prattle but this album is possibly the most challenging/satisfying listen in my collection.
Spanish Key is a groove.

i don't see how this is challenging for some, there are so many repeating melodies and toe-tapping moments on this thing. its very conventional when compared to most free jazz; however, for the time its use of instrumentation in this way was reasonably groundbreaking. yes, sun ra had done this style before davis (no question), but davis is the one who allowed it to gain some truly mainstream attention.
