Did you know they don't actually do any math stuff at all? they just feel out the rhythms when writing the music... some of it takes ridiculous memory though. I can't remember which track on here has it, but there's a guitar riff with 98 notes in one line of music. seriously

Well, Meshuggah themselves have said that a lot of this album was just screwing around with very little actually written down. That's why they can't play the entirety live. They never "learned" it in the traditional sense; they just kind of played it.

So in other words they don't have the godly memory that I'd hoped

That's crazy. That would be awesome if they just played this thing live... or at least Dancers from Obzen. Still doesn't stop me from trying to learn how to play it.

It's weird how this is probably their most tight release imo, but they don't seem to take it too seriously because it can't be played live.

Really? The first riff alone is crazy. When I first heard the into guitar riff I wasn't impressed at ALL. But the next time... it just made me go cross-eyed when I first really concentrated on the guitar rhythm.

The way it almost sounds like it repeats the same thing 4 times, but each section is rearranged to sound different while it goes in and out of rhythm, and the snare is played slightly different each time to make it sound almost unbalanced, but then it snaps back into place and repeats. It plays while the harmonized guitars are playing that ugly riff in the backround. It's just perfect

This riff really sinks in by the time they change it up with the vocals coming in and going for a more polyrythmic feel which is still really hypnotizing when focusing on the guitars... but then they sink in that first riff AGAIN, then vocals, then the riff strikes AGAIN. It pulls me in so efficiently I can't stop listening when I turn this album on.

Unlike DEI or Nothing which are more face value, this album is filled with really ADDICTING, dense riffs and rhythms that take way more dissecting than I usually hear in music. It's so detailed and always enjoyable (to the point of hypnotizing) I can't give it anything less than a 5.

obZen is better. so is I

I? That's one of the most simple Meshuggah releases. They recorded it randomly instead of writing detailed rhythms and it's so straight forward like DEI. I think those two are their most accessible (and boring) releases besides Contradictions Collapse which is flat out bad... but the harder it is to understand the album, the higher the payoff is. all in my opinion of course
