Everyone knows the top 3 are (rest is just my opinion):
I&W/Scenes>Awake>6Deg>BC&SL>ADTOE>Octavarium>TOT>SC>FII>S/T>WD&DU

I haven't listened to Awake in a long time or their debut so I disclude them. I think ADTOE should switch with TOT and that will more or less be right depending on the kind of mood I'm in. But yeah, there's no arguing about scenes and I&W at least

Yeah they never made another album like Awake, but it's still flawed. Nothing below the first two are above a 4.
And yeah the middle four especially are pretty much interchangeable, all around a 3.75 for me

Liftingnshadows and space dye vest are awesome tracks but that's all I have from the album and I'd like to revisit it. Probes do it at some point when I'm feeling really notalgic. ToT is a solid 4 for me

Wait, what about six degrees? Surely that's at least a 4 of some sorts...?

i've always found it odd that there's that strange class of dt fans that likes 2000s dream theater more than stuff like awake

I said not above a 4, 6Deg is definitely at least a 4, probably like a 4.3 for me

seasons and six degrees tied for 4th probably

I'd say their top 4 are scenes/I&W > six degrees > ToT.
Can't make any comments on awake tbh, but I i think I'd fall into that class sonic

i really wanna like train of thought more but it just sound like portnoy and petrucci were really tryin to FORCE the heaviness and it cant be forced it has to cum natural :D

It's not the heaviness that appeals to me, it's the more darker atmosphere and tone which is unparalleled consistently in the DT catalogue. Was a really nice change and I think that sums up what Portnoy brings to the band

those fans probably listened to images and words only then octavarium onwards

Just became friends with a local drummer that's a pretty big Dream Theater fan. We talked about I&W and he told me his fave album was A Dramatic Turn Of Events.
We started jamming and I kept playing the intro to Erotomania hoping he would play along, then I realized he didn't know the song or Awake.
Sad day =(
