this is my favorite Opeth album.

No Steve Wilson tutoring, no prog rock influences, NO KEYBOARDS!!!!!!.....

just f***ing death/black metal with an enormous twist, period.

No prog rock influences or keyboards? You sure about that?

This would probably be my fave Opeth album if Karma wasn't on it.

yeah man.

In this, there are no keyboards, except for the last track, which is more of an long-play interlude than an actual song and i can't recognize any apparent prog rock influences.

but that's just me.

Btw, the cover uploaded here belongs to the re-issue of this record.

In the first edition of this, the band's logo and the title are absent.

Many of Akerfeldt's chords, chord progressions, and song structures have been influenced by progressive music since day one. This album is no different. Also, I hear very little black metal influence here.

I don't know, the beggining of April Ethereal always brings Dimmu Borgir to my mind. Demon of the Fall also sounds kinda blackish imo.

True, but here those influences are very well hidden.

Plus, for me, this is the last record that the band cloaks its influences so well.

The records that followed were huge, but the prog rock influences scream and shout all the time.

As for the black metal influence, it exists more as a shadow and less as a musical influence, indeed.

But it is there. For me at least :-)

It's there, just faintly. It's certainly more prevalent on their first two albums though.

Akerfeldt's vocals on Orchid and Morningrise sound almost black metal at times

They approach it on here at times too. This album has his best vocal performance for sure. There's good range in his growls and the delivery is just so powerful in each and every line. And great cleans as always.
