Rudess is a very versatile keyboardist who enjoys experimenting, but he still has that inner child that wants to wank all over the keyboards. I think JP and MP played large roles in bringing his wankery to the fore, and now since the band is known for that and expected to wank, JR succumbs to the pressure.

He experiments and fiddles with so much new equipment I'm surprised he never properly experiments on the studio albums.

I enjoyed Octavarium but they started becoming generic from that album. ToT is definitely Metallica worship but it's enjoyable. Thats the problem with modern DT, their albums aren't enjoyable, they're way too contrived and it feels as if too much thought goes into every minute of every song.

i'm hoping the self titled one will be an excellent piece, maybe a new member will force them to do something else.

On a separate note this is probably DT's best album cover

Highly doubt it, JP's way too focused on pleasing fans. Also I don't think Mangini will bring much more diverse musical elements to the bands music.

This was their last consistent album. Train of Thought's good, but it's all over the place.

but we heard that sitar thing, it probably wasn't DT even though the video said so but who knows, it was interesting and sounded something different

Funny, Six Degrees and Black Clouds are the only DT albums I don't have. The new one too, but I wasn't bothered to check it out.

Didn't really dig the new one.

Black Clouds' lyrics are pretty lame but conceptually and musically a long with Six Degrees I find them the most

interesting.

One day, I'll download Six Degrees and see for myself.

Also, I saw this:

"It isn't insanely technical like those technical death metal bands, their technical aspects are still enjoyable and discernible, it's just that they need to move on from that style of composing music now."

and I couldn't disagree more. DT's technicality, while annoying at times, is fucking incredible. Portnoy's written some insanely difficult stuff on all DT records. Even simple sounding songs like One Last Time, Pull Me Under, and These Walls have crazy little passages that show Portnoys skill. The reason I don't mention guitars and keys is because 1. climactic already mentioned them, and 2. I don't play said instruments.

tl;dr tech death bands can't keep up with DT's technicality (even thought wank gets annoying fast).

Definitely not DT.

6D and ToT are the best '00s DT albums. In the Name of God, that is all
