There are tons of theories; DM fans really are just that: 'fanatic'. The most probable, however, is that Anton (Corbijn, their video/image director since 85) was referencing 'The Little Prince', the French children's book of a somewhat philosophical leaning. The entire 'Enjoy The Silence' video is something of a tribute to it, but an integral part of the story is a single red rose.
