Got to agree there, love Axe's performance on it. People may criticise Opeth's newer material but getting him is a very smart decision on Mikeal's (or the bands, I don't know if he makes all the big decisions because by the sounds of it he does) part, he clearly cares about the material Opeth are putting out.

Yeah he seems into it, but Opeth is undoubtedly Mikael's band as he pretty much writes all the material.

disagree and I've seen these guys live during the Heritage tour - did you?

He does a great job on disc but he's unable to replicate the 'chops' you all love so much when playing those songs live. He has a prone to 'metal' touch that can be disguised on records but it's all there when he plays live. That's my two cents.

Have you even heard the solo he used to do on that tour and that I mentioned? https://youtu.be/4ZAw3NMDB60?t=158

Yuk.

Yes I have seen them on their Heritage tour, yes he is not as good as performing the pre Watershed material than the previous drummer but he killed it performing Hertiage material.

@Lunatic: if it makes you happy the guy yelling at about 4:40 is gently telling the drummer to move (with consequent crowd laugh).

Couldn't give a shit about his live drum solo or how he plays their older songs all I know is that his performance on Heritage is one of my favourite drumming performances ever.

He actually sounds more natural playing that loose jazzy style than he does playing metal.

Haha you really are a lunatic. I saw them live last year and he was bang on! Should've heard the drum variation on The Devils Orchard, hnnnnnggg.

And as for that performance it's quite inaccurate to judge a drummer by one 'off' drum solo, nothing can be perfect all the time.

Fair play though, it's your two cents like you said :]

Proper drum solos are boring as fuck. It's somewhat listenable if it's less than 10 seconds

"Most drum solos suck anyway."

Unfortunately that's very true. But fortunately there are exceptions to that:

Indeed, let's talk about that ford.

Hessian Peel is the most underrated of Opeth's 10+ minute tracks.
