This album slaps.
Chuck had multiple interviews where he heavily implied that he kinda regretted the name Death and thought the whole ultra “br00tal” progression with metal was kinda dumb because it just pushed people away from the genre.
So yeah it tracks that the lyricism got way more meaningful on later Death albums and also that they steered a bit more towards the proggy side of things.
Personally I definitely wouldn’t mind if modern metal lyrics stopped trying to be “br00tal” all the time. It’s so tiresome and lame.

agreed, the more thrash a death metal album is the better it is, the more brutal slammy a death metal album is the worse it is

The entire mentality of metal in general of needing to push the envelope has ruined the genre in many ways. Everyone has backed themselves into the same corner where everything sounds the same. Solos are excessively technical and soulless. Barrage of some mathematical equation of 0-0-0-0-0 on guitar etc. The mind set of “less is more” has been lost with most modern metal bands.

the major problem with this record (and please keep in mind i love it so im coming from a positive place) is that its clear most of the songs were riffs more intended for control denied he slapped together into death songs because of his contractual obligation to nuclear blast.
most of the songs follow the same structure and it becomes noticeable in a way the songwriting usually isnt on all the other death albums. the riffs are still undeniable but chucks songwriting was what set death apart from everything else, and it suffers here as a result of the circumstances surrounding the album.

Yeah, To Forgive is to Suffer could actually be my favorite track off this album.
I think I heard a few Death songs off Human or ITP first over a decade ago, but this band didn't click for me until I heard Crystal Mountain randomly on shuffle one day
