Yes Dominion, I think I agree. It's perfect.

I’m not clamouring for it but I still wouldn’t rule out Opeth returning to their death metal sorta style.

Band has pigeonholed themselves a bit with Sorceress but still, they still retain that aura of unpredictability.

Agreed Pleb, I think they'll do what they feel like, which can always change. We'll see next year.

I like how people bag on Watershed when this album was one of their least interesting efforts from this era of the band. There are whole sections of the tracks on this album that are just completely monotonous and empty.

Both this and Watershed are great. I do prefer BP though, as it's the album that got me into Opeth

I have to agree. The extent to which still life and MAYH are better than this is not evident from the ratings on this site. Sure, this broke them into new light after the success of SL, but it lacks the songwriting of the 2 previous releases. I almost never come back to this one anymore.

Yeah this is my 7th fav Opeth. It’s awesome but it’s def not on the level of the first 4 albums or Ghost Reveries/Watershed imo.

Among the worst tracks on the album.

Anyway, I'm just trying to understand the atmosphere that facilitated this album's rise in popularity. Was there that much of a dearth of good material in this genre back in '01? Sure doesn't seem like it since a bunch of bands released better albums.
