Sleep Well Beast is more the night version of this album rather than a superior or inferior follow-up. I feel they compliment each other well; plus, The National can do no wrong, so

I still haven't heard this one. Giving it a listen now, but I'm sure I'll love it since I've become a huge fanboy of this band.

Every album by this band takes a lot of time to sink in for many listeners, this one the most out of them all I think.

this one was the most immediate for me actually, except for the new one.

This always struck me as their most subtle and least accessible

I've said this before but I was quite disappointed with this album when it dropped. Wasn't until around this time last year I decided to give it a few more chances. Slowly but surely, it started to work its magic. Now I adore it.

Yeah this is one of my most played albums by now because it took so long to digest, but once you give it the patience and listens it deserves, it really rewards you.

"the peaks are the peaks of their whole discography to me."

the peaks aren't quite the discog peaks imo, but theyre up there for sure. this is the last time, sea of love, graceless, and pink rabbits are all immaculate

Agreed and those are my favorite tracks on here, but I'd rank Don't Swallow the Cap above Pink Rabbits, even though I love Pink Rabbits. Demons and Humiliation are up there too.

Re-listened to this last night and it finally hit me that this is the National's best album. I not only related to so many songs on here, but the atmosphere is sublime, the music is gorgeous, and the melodies are unrivalled in my eyes. Seriously thinking of bumping this to a five.

Well, transcending with the great Doofus Wainwright is a temptation too hard to ignore. What the hell, I couldn't find one moment I wasn't completely in love with during my last listen. A five it is!

Thanks, Doof! Love this site. Can't think of another place that gives me the opportunity to talk about great music with people who share the same passion.

Sleep Well Beast comes closest to this for me, it's just "Turtleneck" and to a lesser extent "Empire Line" that keep it from a five for me. I haven't listened to their first two either.
