what made you decide all bands like this were terrible though? super talented musicians and honestly there's only so much you can do with standard formulas/time signatures so I have no issue with a band going a little more out there and progressive

Its just not my style. I find 99% of it cheesy as fuck and super cringeworthy. Their talent is mostly evident yes but it sounds messy to me and overall directionless. I'm talking about the genre as a whole. Just my personal feelings. There are some exceptions of course.

Metal is inherently kinda cheesy and cringe.

Hawks you might like Alaska. I know it prob won't sway you but it doesn't have nearly as much prog cheese as everything after and the progressive elements compliment their metalcore sound well on that album. This is probably my favorite of their full on prog era. Haven't really connected w anything post Parallax I

revisited and still kind of feel the same way as i did back in the day. very much in two halves for me here. mirrors is a gorgeous little opener and obfuscation and disease are two of their best. firing on all cylinders and a great continuation of colors. outro solo on obfuscation is incredible. these two are still heavy as fuck with some dope riffs but has great transitions into the clean sections. the first clean section in disease is so porcupine tree, i love it so much. the bassy smooth part at the end. that swing part with the organ keys that sound like ghost revs. top 5 btbam song.
then fossil genera starts. kind of an irritating intro section and definitely one of their weaker songs. i fail to remember much of it. and swim to the moon i admire the attempt is simply way too long. great album but i do miss some of the heavier tech death riffin and experimentation of colors. that really was their peak of style mashing to me. fun to revisit though, lets see how parallax holds up next.
