many things inspired it. I grew into many of the songs, started really listening to Bannon's melodies, and definitely the ridiculous loudness and ugliness of atmosphere that Ballou creates with his big, fat, dissonant slayer-esque riffs and awesome chords

yes

I also love the drum work, especially in "Concubine" and "Homewrecker". Its also worth mentioning that the album flows phenomenally, and I also love Bannon's vocals. Its just a pound-your-face album that I really find myself addicted too. None of the members have any ridiculous technical talent at all, but they all do their part in other ways and it really works for me. I love the band

I love how the vocals sound like a ghost screaming from inside a cage or something and the guitars create like a static shimmering over the whole thing. It's a really ethereal sound that I've never heard anywhere else. It's really conducive to how heavy the songs are and how emotive tho vocals are. Add the lyrics to that mix and this is definitely a 5.

yeah I agree with that. If Ballou didnt use his excellent production skills to create an amazing atmosphere in every song, the album wouldn't be nearly as awesome. It's really him that makes this. He takes Bannon's desperate but powerful screams, mixes them with lightning fast thrash style drumming, and tops it off with really muddy and punky guitar work that just sounds so evil. I also love whenever Converge does one of those 'sludge songs'. A typical Converge song is like 2-3 minutes of a mix of metalcore with punk and sometimes thrash or grind, but on each album they have 1-2 longer more atmospherically dense songs (Title track from this, title track from You Fail Me, Worms Will Feed) and then also throw in a cool little ballad and then call it an album

yeah this is long but its how i feel about the band

4/5. Its an excellent record, but some of the songs really do nothing (last 3 tracks). Love the title track, Drop Out, Eagles Become Vultures and a few others. But Axe to Fall, which is a more thrash version of that album, is definitely better, and my second favorite Converge.
