d2 is the #1 game

project diablo 2 is a well supported mod/private server that modernizes it a bit with quality of life features and some intelligent balance/end game à la path of exile

I do enjoy this more than I used to, but I'd definitely like it more with different vox.

But I can't ever see this not being my lowest ranked/rated Death. Really, I don't think it should be a Death album tbh, which I guess isn't surprising since most of these were written for Control Denied's debut.

I mean I think this is a pretty natural progression from where they were going, their entire discog is basically drawn out from point A to B of classic death metal to progressive/technical death metal

There's definitely a few songs here where you can see they probably reworked them from something meant for Control Denied (Story to Tell in particular feels like this for me).

But ultimately I think they managed to make it sound like a proper Death album after all was said and done.

Entire back half of this album is incredible.

Still has a 4.4 rating overall but yea I definitely don't agree with the 3 / 3.5 ratings.

I am a bit surprised this has a higher average than Individual Thought Patterns though.

Always heard that. That mod community sounds dope. I love this era of games where the classics are maintained and revitalized by passionate fans. I also hate that we'd rather play the classics than much of the new stuff.

D2 fans should def play Grim Dawn and Last Epoch.

Regarding this album, I def can't say I was surprised when I learned that a lot of the songs were intended for CD. Human got pretty technical with some prog influence, and ITP took that even further, in particular being way more technical. Symbolic toned down the technicality and wasn't as dark sounding as ITP, still riffs hard but with more melody throughout and more prog influence.

But with this, they went from death metal / tech death with progressive elements to straight up prog metal with some death metal influence. I'm not the biggest fan of prog metal, so that made it a bit harder to get into. Chuck's new vocal style was probably the most unwelcome change. I love his vox on other Death albums, but his high-pitched style on this is so grating, it took me a long time before I could even really listen to it in full.

That's not to say it's bad, it just took me a while to get into. It definitely has some sick songs and plenty of killer riffs, but it just doesn't hit me the same way as the others. If I jam any other Death album, I'll wanna repeat it, but I can rarely listen to this one in full. Usually, I only jam certain songs, and it usually makes me wanna hear a different Death record lol

this was one of the first prog-death albums I jammed, had never really heard much like it before so this slayed me. Tween years. I can't be objective about it, I just love this one

last epoch does some things incredibly well but other things horribly, i gave up on it. i'm stoked for titan quest 2, the gameplay teaser looks very sweet. titan quest 1 is clunky but the overworld and vibe is so interesting. nothing beat's diablo's gothic/early middle ages/religious horror vibes but antiquity greece/egypt is super cool.
