It baffles me that they were able to write a song that bad (like by far the worst song on St. Anger if it had made the album bad) in the first place.

If you think about it, it would make sense making St. Anger after Lulu, like "i'm madly in anger with you" on a self conscious basis.

Man lulu is pretty sad to think about. That project was probably the most inspired either artist had been in decades to make an album and for it to turn out the way it did... especially considering it’d end up being Reed’s last album ever.

Yeah, totally agreed. Maybe the worst "expectations vs actual album" rock effort ever.

I still hate that that album has ruined that narrative for so many people

Not even just from our perspective but for them personally.

It was both Lou Reed’s final attempt at commercial relevance and Metallica’s one chance to shed the “sellout” label by making something truly artistic... and it flopped terribly on both ends.

Even with the overwhelmingly negative reception I bet it’s the album James and Lars are most proud of deep down (post-black album obviously)

"by making something truly artistic..."

I fail to understand how could anyone view Lulu as an artistic music effort. They should have bailed the moment they were approached. But i guess, Lou Reed is an important name in music industry...

Whitened? sounds sweet, writing a whole harmonic section just to use it backwardds and come up with this (the actual opening in the album) is pretty genius
