How could you give anything from these guys a 2? This album is fantastic. Heavy, unique, and worthy of plenty of relistens

i could see it. granted its been a while since i listened to this but the prog aspect always felt a little weak. like on the czar and the last baron, it feels like they just repeat whole sections to pad out the length. a lot of the songwriting feels bloated imo.

Definitely a valid point. I think that could be said for this type of metal as a whole as well. Prog usually bores me to death, yet the riffage and heaviness on this album always stood out to me

for sure. i know this is a really generic argument but if this was a more streamlined, 35-40 minute record it'd probably be my favourite mastodon. you don't really even need to drop any particular songs, just tone down the repetition

but then they would have less prog cred

I don't see how that would improve the album tho. Are there songs here you reckon are too long?

Isn't "prog cred" basically negative cred?

this album has their best writing, as far as melodies and riffs and guitar solos, imo.

I can't decide between this and Leviathan as their best but I return to this album more because of songs like The Czar. However, Leviathan, I have a real soft spot for it due to it's concept and being a fan of vikings and shit and the sea.
