"Depeche and NIN are now examples of 'pretentious alt 90s music'... not sure about that one chief."
No they re not pretentious at all, that s not what I said. Ulver can be seen as such though, by doing artsy ambient synthpoppier vibe that, often/ occasionally, make me think of those extremely influential bands from the 90's.
Shame on Demon, twisting words like a reporter.

I don't think it's very wrong to call new Ulver pretentious, and I don't think that should be viewed as a necessarily bad thing. If something's pretentious, doesn't mean it's by default lesser in value. I may not like pretentious things, but Akerfeldt is and always was hella pretentious, and so is Steven Wilson and I love their music (for the most part)

"I haven't listened to any Ulver post-Nattens because the trilogy is perfect and there aren't many perfect things in this world"
wait are you serious??

absolutely wack take ngl
things that are tryhard enough to have obligatory pretentious warnings:
- all 90s NIN (eww)
- Kveldssanger (eww)
- Perdition City and Blood Inside (best two Ulver albums)
- not depeche mode jfc what

are you guys using pretension to mean stuff that just sounds highbrow to you or what cuz i dont see how you could listen to an album in a vacuum and decide its pretentious without artistic context

are you guys using pretension to mean stuff that just sounds highbrow to you - I think they did, or maybe even I did too in the first sentence. In the second I used it in the context of actually listening to interviews with the mentioned gentlemen wherein this is indubitably displayed

pretension = trying too hard and it clearly showing

calling something pretentious is pretentious
|

Garm nowadays seems relatively chill, but some of his 00s interviews are hypercringe
"sounds like a personal ascription"
on the one hand yes, on the other hand if you don't feel able to append that ascription to the likes of Dead City Centres' v/o or Trent Reznor recording TDS in 10050 Cielo Drive, you don't deserve cognitive faculties

i dont ever listen to NIN but maybe if i knew trent reznor persona and was familiar with the music sure
but man dead city centres is so campy its the complete opposite of tryhard pretension

Album Rating: 3.5
okay, imagine doing something as pretentious as Trent Renzor did, yet still making basic bitch music completely ill-fitting of that descriptor, lmao
but yes, usually when talking about music no-one bothers to understand the intention of the artist, therefore 'pretentiousness' is measured in silly ways
