Musically this is the most interesting thing they’ve done in a while but Chino isn’t at his best here. Think he’s lost something off the top of his range. Relies a lot on his filters for the harsher moments, and on layered harmonies to carry the more atmospheric moments. Also relies a little too much on his gimmick of throwing in dissonant notes where you otherwise expect something melodic, which loses its effect in the absence of his usual melodic highs. It’s the same problem Tool had on FI, trying to write around the lack of the usual vocal high points. It’s pulled off better here, probably because Chino is much more involved in writing. But bottom line I’d love to hear this exact same album with a younger Chino on vocals, but hey I guess we can’t have everything we want. It’s still pretty great, just not a 5 for me right now

I think it's the production and writing choices that possibly make him more restrained here. On Gore his voice was front and center on the record and even though it was one of his worst performances on record (mostly cause of his adoption of a screamy-shouty-whiny style that was filtered to hell) he could still hit those notes when he needed to and didn't seem to have an issue with it.

I'd say ever since he blew his vocal cords in '01,'02 he's remained pretty much the same if anything there's a very slight decline. Not at all on par with how much MJK's vocals have diminished.

Agreed with everyone itt who has compared this to a blended KNY/DE. I've been referring to it as a more intense/angrier KNY and I know some disagree but I still think it's fitting. Perfect mixture of my favorite Deftones styles.

This has the least in common with DE out of every other deftones album

The way I view it is that the expansive atmosphere is its KNY half, the soaring melodies are the DE half. There's obviously traces of their entire discography sprinkled throughout however. TLID feels like ATF at times.

TLID sounds like it’s more at home on S/T to me

kinda dumb to say this is the least in common to DE than the rest of the stuff (valk) when since then they’ve pretty much started a new era to their sound with the guitar tones and emphasis of Delgado’s roles

So I had this at 4.5 when it dropped but now after many listenings I realised that this is the most 5.0 album of all Deftones albums. Error and The Spell of Mathematics, holy shit.

yes there certainly are elements such as his more prominent presence in the mix and the bass for example that are clearly separable by eras and this has more in common with DE than the pre DE stuff in that avenue, but as far songwriting goes (which maybe I should have specified) DE was their most accessible and straightforward album and this one is definitely one of their more adventurous ones in this regard and harkens back to their WP/SNW/ST days.

The production obviously also plays a big part and although I agree there are clearly identifiable pieces from their post-SNW era that are still present here, the overall mix of old/new reminds me more of KNY and Gore mixed with WP, SNW and ST than it does with Diamond Eyes.

I don’t think this has that much in common with DE either to be honest
Production wise it reminds me most of KNY. Rhythmically/song structure wise much less forward-driving and much more grunge influenced IMO than DE, much less mechanical. Vocally not really close to DE either which had the vocals a lot more front and center and had lots of big hooks and melodies

Yeah I mean gore is garbage, I just ignore it. This is pretty good, but I’m not ready to anoint it on WP/DE tier yet. I love all their stuff other than gore though, so placing it with the rest of the pack isn’t a bad thing
