I enjoyed turtleneck as I did every song on the record, my problem so far is that no moment has emotionally jarred me yet. I feel no connection to the music, it's just been nice background moments. It's the National though, so I'm not naive enough to think that the relative indifference will last long.

Hmm, I think it's incredibly affecting, especially the opener, Born To Beg, Empire Line, and especially Carin

on my first listen through and a bit sleepy but man turtleneck is awesome wth

Also yeah Matt said during the NPR performance last that "Don't listen to the rip, it's all wrong". I thought he was exaggerating but I'd almost say you haven't really heard the album yet until you hear the HQ

Two listens in and I think the opener might be my favorite. Feels like it's tapping into some eternal sadness with that piano line, the kind of melody that seeps into your subconscious. Bliss.

I think Carin might just be my new favorite National song
Yeah, the opener and all the ballads really are so beautiful

Carin is unspeakably gorgeous, still haven't had a vulnerable moment with it yet.

Born to Beg and Dark Side have gotten me emotional

I nearly bawled at the 'hey baby' line from Nobody Else

Glad to hear all this. It means the connection will happen, just needs more time.

Born to Beg is incredible. This official version really is the way to experience the album.

I mean I'm hearing it in pretty damn high quality, but I will definitely download the official version (which I always was going to do regardless) and hold off on rating until after that. I would like to buy a physical copy but probably won't have the patience to wait until after work to scour local electronics stores. Will prob just wake up 15 mins early before work, download from itunes, and listen on the hour long morning commute.

I'm telling you, to use a lame pun, the HQ album is a different beast altogether

Am i the only one who doesn't like how monotonous he constantly sounds on the album? On this one he actually sings, even shouts a little. Whereas this runs the full gamut of emotions, the new one seems a little one dimensional. Nothing is quite as affecting as slipped, or as catchy as sea of love, or downright beautiful and experimental as this is the last time

New one has actual indietronica, that's more experimental than anything else in their discog. Think what you want of the quality but it's hard to argue that it isn't their most adventurous genre-wise.

I think Matt sounds wonderful on SWB, I think his softer register has really come into its own

How is This is the Last Time (or anything they've done in their discog, for that matter) experimental?
|
| |
I mean I definitely think This is the Last Time has some experimental properties to it, especially the outro, and the new one, while not radical, most definitely does

Come on that outro is beautiful and wholly unique sounding
