but what they chose SUCKED imo. they used that effect a few times throughout the album like on “prince of darkness”. Actually makes me wonder what the equipment specs were. I’ve read alot of those ideas were Marty’s but im not sure.

just from my reading it definitely seems this was a full marty effort. dave went along with it to keep him in the band. don't really get the sense that dave is embarrassed by it, just something that made sense at the time. also this quote is hilarious lol

"People wanted a Megadeth record. They didn't wanna see Dave bending over backwards to keep Marty Friedman happy, 'cause Marty wanted us to sound like fucking Dishwalla."

Lmao yeah i love that. But Marty has said this was all Dave’s idea, that Lars challenged Dave to “take a risk”. When marty got interviewed by loudwire, he seemed to imply that he wanted Risk to be heavier but Dave was fixated on chasing metallica’s mainstream sound, so he helped write softer songs. And then Marty got the blame for it. Honestly, i’m willing to believe it’s a bit of both.

Actually now that you mention it this guitar tone isn’t too far off from Varg’s lol. I like the idea of dave using Burzum to influence his radio rock album.

yeah i've read that too sonoma, just kind of hard to believe when dave went right back to thrash and marty has been like making songs for animes in japan lol. very different post risk careers. but i do believe dave at least partially thought it was a good idea to try.

and yes budge i will do that for sure, the paranoid cover is great!

dave has admitted “Crush Em” is of his doing, and that’s the worst song on the album imo. The story about the song’s inception is hilarious. Bht Marty has been heavy since Risk, like his Inferno album that has some borderline death metal on it. So idk

Also, that “paranoid” cover might be the best cover of any Sabbath song ever. It’s so fucking good

His autobiography is one of my favorites. I heard he’s releasing a new memoire to coincide with his farewell tour and i’m very eager to read it
