I guess I don't hate when metal is "fun" and not super self serious but I do think a lot of the appeal of metal is the theater of seriousness overall.

tbh this music is compressed way too hard for any distinction between real and fake to matter. the more melodic Necrophagist-style sound makes it way more tasty than something like Rings of Saturn but for better or for worse, it's the musical equivalent of an energy drink.
I can't be too hard on this band though, many worse bands have tried to make a career out of sweep picking. this band is more gracious than most by realizing you have to write a song out of it.

as far as the whole seriousness thing is concerned, I think most bands are way more laid back than they are assumed to be. just because they're not posting nik nocturnal collabs doesn't mean they aren't goofing around and aren't aware of the ridiculousness of the music they play.

This is growing on me quite a bit, initial thoughts were it's not as good as BtF but I'm really digging the more melodic vibe here.
Why does screaming man scream so fast? Is he late for something?

He's got A LOT to say and less than 40 minutes to get it into your ear holes.
The bump in melodicism and overall catchiness of this record sits real nice with me. It's heavy when it needs to be, technical when it needs to be, and non-stop hooks. Despite the musicianship it never feels like wankery. It tastefully shreds.
