I mean they're all irreplaceable for real. Without Steph, Abe and Chino there is no Deftones "sound."

Idk man, he was a beast on KNY. He sounded the worst on Gore and Ohms. He just always sounded like he was reaching on those records. Obviously his aggressive style has gone by the way side but he's so dynamic it doesn't infringe on the songs at all. Honestly, I think he sounded the best on ST.

After listening to the album a few more times, my primary issue with Locked Club is its placement. Both My Mind is a Mountain and Locked Club shouldn't be next to each other, but I don't know if there's a better spot for it.

He def sounded the worst on Ohms imo.
I’m so glad they went back to writing good melodies for this album. Tracks like Infinite Source really benefit from it. My biggest issue with the album is I think the first 3 songs are a fairly slow start

I can confidently say after enough listens thats this is a 3.5. Very solid but not in the top 5 for me.

my mind is a mountain and locked club are sibling tracks
the former is the older brother with 160 IQ, a doctorate, and a 6 figure salary
the latter is the younger brother with down syndrome
the older brother loves his younger brother, and pays for his medical and caregiver fees, allowing him to continue existing peacefully, but also recognizes the fact that he could do more with his life if he passed, and feels bad about having those thoughts, so he hugs him often to atone
cruel to separate them, cruel to keep them together, tragic really

Yes. They haven't had soaring melodies like this since.....well KNY. I'd say Nick is the superior producer for the band at this stage in their career. If they continue on hopefully they stick with him. Terry was great for a time, but it's been past. It didn't work like they wanted it to on Ohms.

Abe has always been the goat agreed. this is the best Steph work in awhile but still definitely past his prime, and he's a dweeb obviously

I still feel like a new Deftones fan since I came in on Diamond Eyes (which is ridiculous because that album is 15 years old.
Can’t say I ever clicked with their first album or self titled.

That's because their self-titled is mostly dog water.

Correct! Self titled eats this album and shits it out unbothered.

Settled on a 4.5, fantastic album.
I Think About You All The Time is stunning.

The problem with latter Deftones is that they're not sexy anymore. Metal vocalists' only redemption (to me at least) is that they can also be seductive, otherwise they're kinda stuck being brutes? ...and Deftones aren't particularly HEAVY or skilled with their instruments, so I'm left with whatever this Cocteau Twins worship is, filtered through a dreary tone. I like the cover art!

S: I think about you all the time, milk of the madonna, infinite source
A: metal dream, cut hands
B: souvenir, departing the body, locked club
C: ecdysis, cuz, my mind is a mountain
Some notes:
-the last 1.5 mins of souvenirs is one of the best and most random moments
-the final track has a super mid chorus, but everything else going on around it is gr8
-milk of the madonna is so much better than I realized when it came out.
