These guys are in their late 50s but perform like beasts. They were very tight and it felt like Portnoy never left!

Listening to Bend the Clock again, and it's crazy how much 70s/80s AOR influence that song has. Some parts sound like they could've come straight out of a Night Ranger or Asia song (just with a few more time sig changes, of course). That's not a slight on the song btw... I have a real soft spot for that era of rock; it's cheesy in all the best ways

Honestly had no idea what I wanted from a Dream Theater album in 2025, but I'm pretty sure this just delivered it

dead asleep is starting to open up to me a bit. def the least interesting song instrumentally but they're def going for a fatal tragedy / beyond this life sorta thing with the lyrics that i hadn't quite tapped into.

just caught them in dc lfggggggg
kinda crazy how erratic james' voice is. he kills the ballads but otherwise there's no rhyme or reason for when he sounds good and when he sounds bad. he killed pull me under but sounded absolutely awful doing as i am... and i would've guessed the exact opposite before the show
after this tour i def think they need to start tailoring their setlist to what he can truly perform. prob need to retire images besides pull me under for instance. playing this album as a whole is a great start in that regard

That's an interesting point and I noticed the same when I saw him in Rochester. Some songs he takes the high notes down and struggles through it (Metropolis pt 1), and meanwhile sings a song like The Mirror perfectly fine with all the high notes. And yes he sings Pull Me Under like a champ

James' main problem is that his technique is undisciplined. He literally just needs to do some voice lessons, but he probably never would because he's too proud

"James' main problem is that his technique is undisciplined. He literally just needs to do some voice lessons, but he probably never would because he's too proud"
besides the two times i've caught them live i haven't really consumed much live dream theater past like 2007/chaos in motion live album (which imo he sounds completely fine on). fans def like to chalk up his vocal problems to his age, wear and tear, the most infamous case of food poisoning in metal history(!) but that def could also be it.
seeing him perform pull me under and the mirror pretty much perfectly makes me believe its not purely just an age thing. those songs might not have the high notes of something like metropolis but there is a lot more mustard on those two songs vocally than most of what they've written in the 21st century.
