tbh I'd definitely see someone labeling this vocal performance as pretentious, especially when the vocalist clearly seems to have a 'regular' voice and is forcing an affected R&B tone. That's not a poor criticism, it's the consequence of a particularly theatric/dramatic/etc singing performance, the kind of which can make an album (in your case--which again, fair play, please enjoy the record) or break it (partially for me, definitely for others).

Toumai released an album this year that I really enjoy, but their vocalist basically sounds like a theater kid read one book on communism, got drunk and started rambling. I can definitely foresee other peeps hating that style.

Just enjoy it mate, I've had countless albums I enjoy slowly lose their rating foothold. It only bothers you if you let it.
